Viking Longships

Viking’s award-winning Longships carry just 190 guests along Europe’s rivers, with the al fresco Aquavit Terrace at the bow, a sun deck with an herb garden and real veranda staterooms. We’ve walked the decks and filmed the rooms, so you can see your room before you book.

A modern river cruise ship navigates the Douro River in Porto, with the iconic Dom Luis I Bridge and historic city architecture in the background.

The River Ship Built for Europe

Viking Longships are the most popular river ships in Viking’s fleet, and the design is shared by dozens of sister ships sailing the waterways of Europe. Each one carries only 190 guests in 95 outside staterooms. The patented layout makes room for full-size verandas, the largest suites on Europe’s rivers, and the Aquavit Terrace, an indoor/outdoor space at the bow for al fresco dining and scenic sailing.

Danny says the ship is only part of the story. The destinations and the crew who look after you from start to finish are what make Viking exceptional. In this tour he walks a Longship from the sun deck down to the restaurant, including the atrium, the Viking Lounge and the Aquavit Terrace. Viking Longships Highlights

Sun Deck on Viking Longships

Sun Deck

The sun deck runs the length of the ship and is the best place to watch the scenery, whether that’s the Wachau Valley or the Rhine Gorge. Up front there are tables and chairs under large umbrellas, with a big shade structure, cocktail tables and loungers farther aft. Because river ships pass under low bridges, almost everything up here folds down, including the railings and even the bridge itself, which rides on hydraulics.

Danny's tip: “My favorite thing on a Christmas Markets cruise is a glass of mulled wine up here while I take in the views.”

Putting Green & Herb Garden

Aft on the sun deck you’ll find shuffleboard and putting greens, a nod to the famous golf courses Viking visits, and Harr Travel can help arrange a round ashore. A walking track loops the deck for a morning stroll. Down the middle runs a full herb garden that is more than decoration: the chefs come up to take clippings and use them in the meals served on board.

Danny's tip: “I like to start every day on the walking track with a cup of coffee, checking out the new destination we're visiting.”

Atrium & Guest Services on Viking Longships

Atrium & Guest Services

The atrium is usually the first thing guests see when they step aboard. A skylight fills it with light, two stories of floor-to-ceiling windows frame the river, and a sweeping staircase connects the decks. Guest relations works like a hotel front desk, there’s a small shop for Viking logo wear and souvenirs, and the cruise manager’s desk handles lectures, excursions and questions about concierge services ashore. An elevator runs between the two main passenger decks.

Danny's tip: “Your cruise manager is going to become your best friend on board. They run the lectures and coordinate all of the excursions.”

Library & Coffee Nooks

Just forward of the deck three corridor is a traditional, curated library with a passenger book exchange and games to share. Nearby is a small internet café, though Wi-Fi is included and most guests bring their own devices. Cozy sofas and chairs are tucked along the corridor, and a coffee nook on each side of the ship serves espresso drinks and teas 24 hours a day, along with sweet and savory cookies.

Danny's tip: “The most important part of the coffee nook is the cookies. I stop by a few dozen times every single day.”

Viking Lounge on Viking Longships

Viking Lounge

Danny calls the Viking Lounge the ship’s living room. The bar serves drinks from morning until evening, and floor-to-ceiling windows keep the river in view. Each evening guests gather here for a briefing on the next day, and screens drop down for talks before the ship goes through locks. The lounge also hosts cooking and culinary demonstrations, and it’s a natural place for happy hour with your fellow passengers.

Danny's tip: “The Lounge hosts different demonstrations too. I made an apple strudel right here not very long ago.”

Aquavit Terrace & Sun Room

Forward of the lounge, the Sun Room offers a buffet at breakfast, lunch and dinner, with the same items served downstairs in the restaurant. Its doors open and a shade extends, so the space works in any weather. Step outside onto the Aquavit Terrace at the bow for more tables and chairs, and two rocking chairs at the very front facing the river. It’s a relaxed alternative to the restaurant and has some of the best views on board.

Danny's tip: “Grab one of the two rocking chairs at the very front. It's like your own front porch while you sail.”

Viking Restaurant on Viking Longships

Viking Restaurant

The Restaurant is the main dining room, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner every day behind floor-to-ceiling windows. Breakfast and lunch are buffet style with items to order from the menu, and dinner is plated. Seating is open, so guests can make new friends or dine with their own group. Beer and wine are included with lunch and dinner, and soft drinks, water, coffee and tea are always included.

Danny's tip: “I love the open dining. You choose how and where you sit, so you can make new friends or enjoy the friends you're traveling with.”

Signature Experiences on a Viking Longship

Aquavit Terrace

An indoor/outdoor space at the bow where guests can dine al fresco and watch the river slide by from two rocking chairs at the very front. Danny calls it your own front porch on the river.

Fold-Down Sun Deck

To fit under Europe's low bridges, the railings, tables, chairs and even the bridge drop down on hydraulics. The crew explains each lock and bridge so guests can enjoy the experience as it happens.

Chef's Herb Garden

A working herb garden runs down the middle of the sun deck. The chefs come up to take clippings for the meals served on board, so it's part of the menu, not just decoration.
