Tallinn, Estonia
Medieval walls and towers, cobbled lanes and hilltop views over red rooftops, a short walk from the ship. Here’s how to spend your day in Estonia’s capital.
A medieval city at the pier
Tallinn has one of the best-preserved medieval old towns in Europe, and it starts just beyond the cruise harbor. Inside the walls, the Lower Town spreads out around Town Hall Square, with merchant houses, guild halls and church spires, while the Upper Town on Toompea hill holds the castle, the onion-domed Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and viewing platforms over a sea of red rooftops. The whole Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Because so much is close to the ship, Tallinn is one of the easiest Baltic ports to enjoy at your own pace. When guests plan Tallinn with us, an Old Town walking tour is usually first on the list. Below are the cruise line favorites and the details that keep the day easy.
Where you’ll dock
Cruise ships in Tallinn use the Old City Harbour. Confirm your arrival details on your itinerary a few days before you arrive.
Old City Harbour
Ships dock along the cruise piers at the Old City Harbour, next to the modern cruise terminal with its rooftop promenade over the water. The Old Town walls are roughly a 15-minute walk away, and ship tours meet right at the pier. On busy summer days several ships share the harbor, so expect crowds in the Old Town by late morning.

Cruise line favorites
Book these in your cruise planner. Ship-sold tours cost a bit more, but the ship waits for you if the tour runs late.
- Old Town walking tour. A guided walk from Town Hall Square up to Toompea and its viewpoints, with the stories behind the walls, guilds and churches. The classic Tallinn excursion.
- Kadriorg Palace & park. The baroque palace Peter the Great built for Catherine I, set in landscaped parkland east of the center, often paired with the Song Festival Grounds.
- Estonian Open Air Museum. Farmhouses, windmills and a wooden church in a seaside forest at Rocca al Mare, showing rural life over the centuries.
- Lahemaa National Park. Forests, bogs, coastline and restored manor houses about an hour east. A longer day, so it’s one to book through your cruise line.
Exploring without a tour
Prefer to explore at your own pace? These are the highlights to know, wherever your day takes you. Keep an eye on the clock.
Town Hall Square
The heart of the Lower Town, ringed by colorful merchant houses and café terraces, with the Gothic Town Hall and one of Europe’s oldest continuously operating pharmacies.
Toompea hill
The Upper Town, home to Toompea Castle, Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and St. Mary’s Cathedral, plus the Kohtuotsa and Patkuli viewing platforms over the rooftops and harbor.
Walls, towers & spires
Long stretches of the medieval town wall still stand, with more than 20 towers, and St. Olaf’s Church spire, once among the tallest in the world, can be climbed in summer for an extra charge.
Before you go ashore
- All-aboard is firm. If you explore on your own, plan to be back at the ship an hour before all-aboard. Ships do leave without late guests.
- Cobbles and climbs. The Old Town is paved with uneven cobblestones, and the walk up to Toompea is steep. Wear comfortable, sturdy shoes.
- Traveling with mobility needs? The hill and cobbles can be hard going. If you or someone in your party has mobility needs, tell your advisor when you book. Our accessibility specialist can help arrange the right support.
- Beat the crowds. Several ships often call on the same day. Heading into the Old Town early, or saving it for late afternoon, means quieter streets.
- Passports and Schengen. Estonia is part of Europe’s Schengen Area. Carry your passport, and follow your cruise line’s instructions for going ashore.
