Messina, Sicily
A cruise pier in the middle of town, a cathedral clock that puts on a show at noon and Taormina and Mount Etna within reach. Here’s how to plan your day in Sicily.
Sicily, step by step
Messina sits on the narrow strait between Sicily and mainland Italy, and it’s one of the easiest Mediterranean ports to step into. The ship docks in the middle of town, and the Norman cathedral, with the largest astronomical clock in the world, is a short walk from the pier. At noon every day the clock’s gilded figures roll out for a 12-minute show.
The bigger draws are a drive away. The clifftop town of Taormina, with its ancient Greek theater looking out to Mount Etna, is about an hour south by road, and Etna itself is farther still. Those are full days, so we suggest ship-sold tours or vetted shore excursions that leave from the cruise terminal. Below are the ones we’d book and the details that keep a Messina day easy.
Where you’ll dock
Messina is a docking port, not a tender port. Confirm your arrival details on your itinerary a few days before you arrive.
Messina cruise terminal
Ships berth along the city waterfront at the Marconi, I Settembre, Colapesce and Vespri quays, with the terminal building on the I Settembre quay. You walk out through the port gate straight onto Via Vittorio Emanuele II, and the cathedral square is a short walk from the pier. A new cruise terminal has been under construction on the I Settembre quay since May 2026, with completion expected in 2027, so expect some construction fencing and changed coach areas.
Used by: Celebrity, Cunard, Holland America, MSC, Norwegian, Oceania, Princess, Royal Caribbean and Viking.

Cruise line favorites
Book these in your cruise planner. Ship-sold tours cost a bit more, but the ship waits for you if the tour runs late.
- Taormina on your own, with transfer. A coach to Taormina and back with free time to wander Corso Umberto and the belvedere. The simplest way to see the town on your own schedule.
- Taormina & the Greek theater. A guided walk and entry to the Teatro Antico, the ancient theater with Etna and the sea as its backdrop.
- Mount Etna. A drive up Europe’s most active volcano to the craters at around 6,000 feet. Some versions add a cable car (extra charge) or a winery lunch. Access depends on volcanic activity that day.
- Messina city & the clock. A shorter tour of the cathedral, the Fountain of Orion and the waterfront, timed for the noon clock show.
Exploring without a tour
Prefer to explore at your own pace? These are the highlights to know, wherever your day takes you. Keep an eye on the clock.
The cathedral & its clock
The Duomo, a short walk from the pier, has the world’s largest astronomical clock in its bell tower. The full show starts at noon and runs about 12 minutes, so get to the square by 11:50.
Piazza del Duomo
Beside the cathedral stands the Fountain of Orion, a 16th-century marble masterpiece by Montorsoli. Nearby, the small Norman church of the Annunziata dei Catalani sits below the modern street level, a survivor of the 1908 earthquake.
Granita & arancini
Messina is a great place to try Sicilian street food: almond or lemon granita with a brioche, and arancini, the fried rice balls. Messina also has its own take on focaccia and pizza.
Before you go ashore
- All-aboard is firm. If you book independently, plan to be back at the pier an hour before all-aboard. Traffic on the coast road between Taormina and Messina can slow the return.
- Taormina is about an hour away. Taormina and Mount Etna are each a full-day trip from Messina. Book a ship-sold or vetted tour that leaves from the cruise terminal so the timing works around your ship.
- Etna is active. Etna has erupted several times in 2026. Summit areas can close at short notice, and only licensed guides may take visitors into the higher zones, so tours adjust their route to conditions on the day.
- Traveling with mobility needs? The walk into Messina is short and flat, but Taormina and Castelmola are hilly, with steep lanes, cobbles and steps. Guests tell us this is harder going than they expected. If you or someone in your party has mobility needs, tell your advisor when you book. Our accessibility specialist can help arrange the right support.
- Check your arrival time. Some ships arrive in Messina mid-morning, and guests often ask us whether a Taormina tour still fits. Compare your ship’s arrival and all-aboard times with the tour’s pickup and return times, and ask your advisor if it looks tight.
