Zaandam

Holland America’s Zaandam is a smaller, music-filled classic built for long voyages, with a Baroque-style pipe organ in the atrium, a pool under a glass roof and a teak promenade for morning walks. We’ve walked the decks and filmed the rooms, so you can see your room before you book.

Smaller Ship, Longer Voyages

Zaandam is one of Holland America’s two R Class ships, built in Italy and in service since 2000, with sister Volendam. Her décor follows a music theme, from guitars signed by rock legends to the Baroque-style pipe organ that anchors the three-deck atrium. Danny notes she sails everything from seven-day cruises to voyages of nearly a hundred days, reaching the South Pacific, the Northwest, the Northeast and plenty in between.

The Lido Pool sits under a retractable glass roof, the Crow’s Nest looks out over the bow, and the two-level Dining Room fills the stern. Since the tour was filmed, the Explorations Café is listed as the Library Café. Watch the full tour below, or jump straight to the part of the ship you care about most.

Zaandam Highlights

Crow's Nest on Zaandam

Crow's Nest

Perched at the very top front of the ship, the Crow's Nest is Zaandam's observation lounge. Recliner-style seats face forward over the bow, lounge seating wraps around both sides, and the bar sits in the middle. Espresso makers make it a morning coffee stop, and cocktails take over later in the day. Art and artifacts fill the room, and it hosts activities and get-togethers when the ship is cruising scenic waters.

Danny's tip: “I really like the layout up here. Grab a coffee in the morning, read the newspaper or a book, and when you're cruising through some of the most scenic parts of our world, this is a wonderful spot to be.”

Lido Pool & Magradome

The Lido Pool sits under the Magradome, a glass roof that closes in cooler or hotter weather and opens on beautiful days. Bench seating wraps around the pool for dipping toes, with hot tubs set just behind. Loungers line both sides in sun and shade, and tables surround the deck for poolside meals. At the far end, a tiki-style bar serves the whole area, with bartenders who can bring drinks to guests around the pool.

Danny's tip: “I like that the pool is big enough to swim laps, especially in the morning or later in the evening. And my favorite part is that full tiki bar set right at the end.”

Dive-In on Zaandam

Dive-In

Tucked in a corner of the Lido deck, the Dive-In is the complimentary poolside grill, with burgers, hot dogs and brats all made to order. Fries come with an assortment of dipping sauces, and they can even be smothered in cheese. A small rotating buffet, such as a taco bar, sits alongside, and it all complements the Lido Market inside. Plenty of tables nearby make it easy to eat a burger by the pool.

Danny's tip: “This is one of my favorite spots on board. My personal favorite is the Cannonball, and I love a Jackknife on the side so I can combine it all together.”

Greenhouse Spa & Thermal Suite

The Greenhouse Spa & Salon covers massages, wraps, facials, acupuncture and medi-spa options, plus a full salon and a men's barber shop. Treatments start and end in a relaxation room with teas and infused water. The Thermal Suite is a paid upgrade with ergonomic stone loungers heated from below, a hot tub and steam and aromatherapy rooms. Separate men's and women's saunas sit by the locker rooms and are open to every guest.

Danny's tip: “Stop by on the first day to tour the spa. I've had back issues for quite some time, so after a shore excursion or on a sea day, those heated stone loungers really open it all up. My favorite treatment is the hot stone massage.”

Lido Market on Zaandam

Lido Market

The Lido Market is the complimentary casual spot for breakfast, lunch, dinner and later into the evening. Stations include made-to-order pasta, a salad bar with Cobb, chicken Caesar and Asian sesame, a carvery, pizza, paninis and charcuterie. Sushi is out every day alongside Indian and Asian fusion dishes. Desserts include churros, pies, cakes and bread pudding, and there are two ice cream stations with soft serve and cookies.

Danny's tip: “I love sushi, so this is a great inclusion that you'll find every single day. And they put in a second ice cream station. This one's designated just for me.”

Neptune Lounge

The Neptune Lounge is the suite-only lounge for guests in Neptune and Pinnacle Suites. The concierge team handles questions and reservations, much like the front desk. Continental breakfast is set out in the morning and appetizers later in the day, with a coffee machine for espresso, lattes and cappuccinos, plus teas and hot chocolate. Seating areas host games and puzzles, and a living-room space has a TV and a computer.

Danny's tip: “The concierge can answer questions and make reservations, really everything they can do at the front desk for you, and even a little bit more.”

Main Dining Room & Club Orange on Zaandam

Main Dining Room & Club Orange

The Main Dining Room spans two decks at the back of the ship, with a stairway linking the levels and large windows on the sides and stern. It serves plated breakfast, lunch and dinner, with early or late traditional seating or anytime dining. Neptune and Pinnacle Suite guests get Club Orange, with their own line, priority service and an expanded menu, and other guests can add Club Orange to their fare.

Danny's tip: “You can upgrade to Club Orange from a Vista Suite, an inside or an ocean-view cabin. Make sure you let your advisor know, because it does fill up.”

Pinnacle Grill & Morimoto By Sea

The Pinnacle Grill is the main specialty restaurant on board, an unapologetic steakhouse with fine quality steaks, seafood, appetizers, soups and salads. On several nights of the cruise it turns into Morimoto By Sea, with a menu curated by the famous chef, including tuna pizza. Guests in Neptune and Pinnacle Suites also enjoy an upgraded à la carte breakfast here every day. It carries a cover charge, so it pays to reserve ahead.

Danny's tip: “I love the ribeye here on board. It's absolutely delicious. And if you're in a Neptune or Pinnacle Suite, that upgraded breakfast here is just one of the many reasons to upgrade.”

Signature Experiences on Zaandam

Danny counts Zaandam's teak promenade among his favorites in the industry. It sits closer to the water, with seating for reading on sea days or watching scenery, and it's a popular track for morning walks.
