Norwegian Breakaway

The ship that debuted Norwegian’s Waterfront promenade pairs a top-deck Aqua Park and ropes course with a Haven complex, Studio staterooms for solo travelers and plenty of complimentary dining. We’ve walked the decks and filmed the rooms, so you can see your room before you book.

The Ship That Started the Breakaway Class

Norwegian Breakaway entered service in 2013 as the lead ship of the Breakaway Class, built in Germany and wearing Peter Max hull art. She carries about 3,900 guests, and Danny calls her the ship that started all kinds of new ideas for Norwegian, above all The Waterfront, the indoor-outdoor dining promenade that later spread across the fleet. Up top there are five water slides, a ropes course and a full sports court, and The Haven adds a private courtyard, restaurant and sun deck. Norwegian lists a 2025 refurbishment.

Danny filmed this tour on a boarding day in New Orleans in late 2022, starting on the pool deck and working down through The Haven, the Garden Cafe, the kids’ clubs, the spa, 678 Ocean Place and the dining rooms. A few venues have changed since: Palomar has replaced Ocean Blue, Moderno Churrascaria is no longer listed, and Silver Screen Bistro now stands where the Spiegel Tent was. Norwegian Breakaway Highlights

Water Slides & Pool Deck on Norwegian Breakaway

Water Slides & Pool Deck

The top deck has five complimentary water slides: two side-by-side racers, two drop slides where the floor falls away beneath you, and a tamer blue slide. Below, the main pool has a shallow entry with bench seating, hot tubs on each side, a bandstand for live music and the two-sided Waves Pool Bar. A splash area serves the youngest cruisers, a jogging track circles the deck, and the pool deck turns into a party zone on theme nights.

Danny's tip: “I love the shallow entrance with bench seating all the way around. If you don't want to go all the way in, you can sit there with a drink in your hand and put your toes in the water.”

Sports Court & Ropes Course

The sports complex has a full basketball court that also hosts soccer and pickup games, and it is wrapped by one of the most extensive ropes courses at sea. Norwegian lists more than 40 elements, five Sky Rail zip tracks out over the ocean and The Plank, a walk out past the edge of the ship in a harness. A mini golf course sits nearby, and Norwegian now also lists The Stadium games area and Horizon Park on board.

Danny's tip: “One of my favorite features is that you can even walk the plank. Don't worry, you'll have a harness on, and up on the very top of the ship you get the best views in the world.”

Vibe Beach Club on Norwegian Breakaway

Vibe Beach Club

Vibe Beach Club is the adults-only sun deck near the front of the ship, with thick padded loungers, ever-changing ocean views, its own bar, TVs for the game and large hot tubs. Access is an extra-cost pass for the full cruise, and Norwegian limits how many it sells. Private cabanas cost extra, and Vibe is not included with The Haven. Spice H2O, at the back of the ship, is the complimentary adults-only option, with a bar and evening theme parties.

Danny's tip: “It sells out every single cruise, sometimes even before the cruise starts, so make sure you pre-book it if it's on your list. My wife and I love to do a cabana on one of the days.”

The Haven

The Haven is Norwegian's keycard-access suite complex, a ship within a ship with its own concierge desk, butler service, lounge and bar. The Haven Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner from a plated menu. The courtyard pool sits under a retractable roof with two hot tubs and is family friendly, while the sun deck outside is for guests 16 and older. A Haven spa area adds a sauna and two treatment rooms, so suite guests never have to leave.

Danny's tip: “These are some of the best bartenders in the entire industry. In fact, a lot of our guests follow their favorite bartenders from ship to ship.”

Thermal Suite on Norwegian Breakaway

Thermal Suite

The Thermal Suite stretches across the very front of the ship inside the Mandara Spa. Padded loungers face the bow and the sides, next to a hydrotherapy pool with jets and a waterfall that is good for your back. The circuit adds heated stone loungers, a sanarium, a dry sauna, a Himalayan salt room, rain showers and a steam room. Passes cost extra, though Danny notes access comes with Spa Balcony staterooms, Spa Club Balcony Suites and the Haven Spa Suite.

Danny's tip: “I've had back issues for quite some time, and the heated stone loungers really warm up my back. Passes go fast, so stop by as soon as you get on board if you want one.”

The Waterfront

Breakaway debuted The Waterfront, a quarter-mile oceanfront promenade on Deck 8 where restaurants and bars spill outside. La Cucina serves Italian with outdoor tables, Cagney's Steakhouse sits at the back of the ship, and Palomar, Norwegian's Mediterranean restaurant, now joins The Raw Bar and Wasabi. Maltings Beer & Whiskey Bar and Shaker's Martini Bar have outdoor bars too, and the walkway wraps around the stern, with glass panels that look straight down to the sea.

Danny's tip: “Dining outside on The Waterfront is my favorite spot to be. Those outdoor tables are very popular, so let them know when you make your reservation and again when you check in.”

Syd Norman's, Headliners & Shows on Norwegian Breakaway

Syd Norman's, Headliners & Shows

Syd Norman's Pour House is a rock club and bar with a live band, brick walls and an outdoor bar on The Waterfront. Headliners Comedy Club hosts stand-up and dueling pianos, and the Breakaway Theater stages Broadway-style shows and game shows. Burn the Floor brings championship ballroom dancing on board, and Bliss Ultra Lounge is the nightclub, known for its silent disco. Next to Shaker's, the Skyy Vodka Ice Bar is kept at 17 degrees.

Danny's tip: “Syd Norman's isn't a huge venue, and I love that because it adds to the ambiance. When they have shows it fills up pretty quick, so check the program and get there early.”

Teppanyaki & Le Bistro

Teppanyaki is Norwegian's Japanese hibachi grill, where chefs cook fried rice, steak, seafood and chicken at shared tables with music and a bit of a show, which makes it a favorite for families. Nearby, Le Bistro serves classic French dishes like escargot and French onion soup, with Paris-themed decor and a few tables set outside along the walkway. Both are extra-cost specialty restaurants, and a Free at Sea dining meal can cover either one.

Danny's tip: “Teppanyaki is one of the most popular dining options on board, so pre-book it. If you miss out, head to the specialty dining reservations as soon as you get on board, usually in Headliners.”

Signature Experiences on Breakaway

Spa Rooms Inside The Haven

Forward of the courtyard pool, The Haven has its own sauna and two spa treatment rooms, including a couples room, so Haven guests can book treatments steps from their suite. Danny says they fill up quickly.

Studio Staterooms & Lounge

Studio staterooms are priced for one guest and come with the keycard-access Studio Lounge, with a bar, espresso, snacks and balcony seating on Deck 11. Danny suggests a Deck 10 Studio if stairs are a concern.

▶ See it · 45:54

Skyy Vodka Ice Bar

The bar, seats and glasses are made of real ice, and guests get a coat at the door before trying Skyy Vodka drinks. Danny calls it the kind of unique experience you won't find anywhere but on a cruise ship.
