Norwegian Getaway

Norwegian’s second Breakaway Class ship pairs The Waterfront, an Aqua Park and a ropes course with The Haven, a frozen Ice Bar and a magic-themed Illusionarium. We’ve walked the decks and filmed the rooms, so you can see your room before you book.

The Breakaway Class Ship Built for Getting Away

Norwegian Getaway entered service in early 2014 as the second Breakaway Class ship, a sister to Norwegian Breakaway. She carries about 3,900 guests and is built around 678 Ocean Place, three decks of dining, bars and entertainment that open onto The Waterfront, a quarter-mile oceanfront promenade. Up top are an Aqua Park, a ropes course and a sports complex. The Haven, the Thermal Suite, the Skyy Vodka Ice Bar and the Illusionarium round out the ship, and Norwegian lists her latest refurbishment in 2024.

Danny filmed this tour on a turnaround day in early 2020, shortly after a major 2019 makeover that added Syd Norman’s Pour House and a full Starbucks. A few things have changed since: Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville is no longer on board, the theater has a new show lineup, and Norwegian’s dining list now shows The Manhattan Room instead of the Tropicana Room. Norwegian Getaway Highlights

Aqua Park & Pool Deck on Norwegian Getaway

Aqua Park & Pool Deck

Getaway's Aqua Park packs five multi-story water slides around two pools and four hot tubs. Free Fall is one of two drop slides, The Whip sends two riders racing side by side through twisting tubes, and a gentler family slide suits younger riders. Little ones get a pirate-themed Kids' Aqua Park. The main pool deck has the Waves Pool Bar, live music for sail away and plenty of sun deck space, with a jogging track circling above.

Danny's tip: “I love the racer slides because it's always fun to race your kids or family. The secret is to eat more before you go, because the heavier person always wins, and I usually do pretty well with that.”

Ropes Course & Sports Complex

Above the pool deck, the multi-level ropes course stretches more than 2,000 feet, with zip lines over the ocean and a plank that reaches out past the side of the ship. Next door, the sports court hosts pickup basketball, dodgeball and soccer. Below the ropes course there's a pirate-themed mini golf course and a rock climbing wall. Danny calls the whole area a great way for kids to burn off energy, with a little friendly competition.

Danny's tip: “I've played miniature golf since I was a little kid, and I still play it with my daughter. Look up for the plank on the ropes course, and if you're brave enough, give it a try.”

Vibe Beach Club & Spice H2O on Norwegian Getaway

Vibe Beach Club & Spice H2O

Getaway has two adults-only spaces. Spice H2O, all the way aft, is complimentary, with a walk-through water feature, hot tubs, a bar and a giant screen, and it turns into an outdoor nightclub after dark. Up on Deck 17, Vibe Beach Club is a quieter retreat that requires a pass for the full cruise. It has soft padded loungers, hot tubs looking out to sea, its own bar and private cabanas that rent for the whole voyage.

Danny's tip: “Vibe passes do sell out, so book yours ahead or right on boarding day. I like to be all the way at the front, where you get beautiful views out over the bow.”

The Haven

The Haven is Norwegian's keycard-access suite complex, a boutique hotel tucked inside a big ship. Suite guests get the Haven Lounge and Bar, the Haven Restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and a private courtyard with a pool, a wading pool and two hot tubs. There's even a small Haven spa with treatment rooms and a sauna. The courtyard is family friendly, while the Haven sun deck above is for guests 16 and older.

Danny's tip: “One thing I love about the Haven Bar is that you'll always find the best bartenders on the ship there. In the Haven Restaurant, I always request a table by the window.”

Thermal Suite on Norwegian Getaway

Thermal Suite

The Thermal Suite inside the Mandara Spa comes with Haven spa suites and spa-category staterooms, and other guests can buy passes. At its heart is a large hydrotherapy pool with waterfall jets, bubble loungers and stronger massage jets. Heated stone loungers face forward out to sea. The circuit also includes a sauna, a steam room, an aromatic steam bath, a large salt room and a huge rainforest shower. The spa adds a barber shop and salon.

Danny's tip: “Passes go really quickly on the first day, so buy one right when you get on board if it isn't part of your room. My favorite spot is the heated stone loungers up front. With my back, I may never get back up.”

The Waterfront

The Waterfront is a quarter-mile oceanfront promenade on Deck 8, and Danny calls it one of the identifying features of the Breakaway Class. The restaurants and bars here all have indoor and outdoor seating right by the water. Look for the Sugarcane Mojito Bar with live music at night, the Sunset Bar beside the cigar humidor, Syd Norman's Pour House for live rock and roll, and La Cucina, the Italian restaurant known for pizza and pasta.

Danny's tip: “The Sugarcane Mojito Bar is where my friends and family always meet up on this ship. I always say the bartender here has the best view of any bartender in the world.”

Teppanyaki & Specialty Dining on Norwegian Getaway

Teppanyaki & Specialty Dining

Getaway's specialty restaurants sit on Decks 6 and 8. Teppanyaki is one of the biggest hibachi rooms Danny has seen at sea, with lower tables that join up for parties of 16. Le Bistro serves classic French dishes like escargot. Cagney's Steakhouse and Moderno Churrascaria share the aft end of The Waterfront, while Ocean Blue and Wasabi cater to seafood and sushi lovers. Reserve the popular ones before you sail.

Danny's tip: “Teppanyaki is a fun, interactive way to eat. When I dined there with my daughter, niece and nephew, everybody was pounding on the table, and the chefs do a great job of making you feel part of it.”

Headliners & Nightlife

Headliners Comedy Club hosts stand-up and Howl at the Moon, the dueling pianos show where the audience drives the song list. The Getaway Theater stages Norwegian's production shows and game shows, and the Illusionarium pairs dinner with a show under its domed ceiling. Later on, Syd Norman's rocks out, the Bliss Ultra Lounge becomes an adults-only nightclub, and the atrium keeps karaoke and game shows going.

Danny's tip: “Howl at the Moon is a really fantastic option, and it's so interactive. To me, that's what cruise entertainment is all about.”

Signature Experiences on Getaway

Skyy Vodka Ice Bar

A sub-zero bar where the bar, the seats and even the glasses are made of ice. Guests borrow a warm parka and sip Skyy Vodka cocktails. Danny's take: a great place to be in the Caribbean, because it's cold.

▶ See it · 29:59

The Illusionarium

A dinner-theater venue built around magic, with a domed ceiling and an entrance hall full of vintage magic and circus memorabilia. Danny calls it one of his family's favorite spaces on the ship.

▶ See it · 49:27

Shanghai's Noodle Bar

A complimentary Asian noodle bar with high-top seating and a fully open kitchen. It isn't on every Norwegian ship, and Danny wishes it were. He says every meal he's had there was delicious.
