Norwegian Joy

The first ship with a race track at sea pairs the Joy Speedway with a forward Observation Lounge built for scenery, The Haven, and a new Thermal Suite and bigger Vibe Beach Club from her 2024 refresh. We’ve walked the decks and filmed the rooms, so you can see your room before you book.

Built for Scenery, Refreshed in 2024

Norwegian Joy entered service in 2017 as the second ship of the Breakaway Plus Class. She was built for China, then moved to North America in 2019 after a major refit that added the large forward Observation Lounge with Alaska in mind. A January 2024 refresh brought a new Thermal Suite in the Mandara Spa, doubled the size of the adults-only Vibe Beach Club and upgraded her staterooms and suites.

Danny’s family has made so many memories on Joy, and The Haven here is his happy place. He filmed this tour in 2024, just after the refresh, walking you from the slides, the Speedway and The Haven down through the spa, the Waterfront and the 678 Ocean Place atrium. Norwegian Joy Highlights

Pool Deck & Ocean Loops on Norwegian Joy

Pool Deck & Ocean Loops

Joy's pool deck is built for families. The Ocean Loops drop slide sends riders out over the side of the ship, with a raft slide on the far side and smaller slides in the Kids' Aqua Park below. There are two pools, several hot tubs, and loungers in the sun and in the shade. A big screen shows movies and games, the bandstand hosts sail-away and evening deck parties, and two pool bars serve the whole area.

Danny's tip: “I've done the Ocean Loops drop slide quite a few times, and it's an absolute blast. My daughter has gone down the kids' slide a few hundred times.”

Joy Speedway & Mini Golf

Joy was the first ship with a race track at sea, and it was such a hit that Norwegian added one to Bliss, Encore, Prima and Viva. The Joy Speedway is a two-level track on the top deck, with single and tandem karts. Racing is an extra cost, and unlimited passes are available. Right next door, the mini golf course is complimentary, and the adults-only Vibe Beach Club sits just below.

Danny's tip: “I've raced here with my kids and on my own, in the tandem and the single karts. Mini golf is one of my favorite complimentary activities on board.”

The Haven on Norwegian Joy

The Haven

The Haven is Norwegian's private, key-card-only complex for suite guests, and Danny calls it his happy place. The lounge centers on a bar with world-class mixologists. The climate-controlled Courtyard has a pool, a hot tub and a retractable glass roof. Joy was Norwegian's first ship with a forward-facing Haven lounge. The Haven Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner with yacht-style service, and the adults-only sun deck has hot tubs that jut out over the side.

Danny's tip: “I jokingly call the Haven bar Cheers, because they know your name and your drink. At the Haven Restaurant, the French toast and the avocado toast are next level.”

Observation Lounge

The forward Observation Lounge is one of the signatures of Joy and her sisters, with a massive two-story window looking straight out the front of the ship. Joy was refit with Alaska in mind, so there's plenty of room to watch the scenery. You'll find a second Starbucks here, light bites in the morning, appetizers later in the day, complimentary drink stations and a full bar. There's music in the afternoon and evening, and it works well for private group events.

Danny's tip: “On boarding day, I come here for the light bites, because it usually doesn't get as crowded.”

Mandara Spa & Thermal Suite on Norwegian Joy

Mandara Spa & Thermal Suite

The Mandara Spa has a barbershop, a salon with ocean-view manicure and pedicure stations, treatment rooms for one or two, and med spa options such as IV therapy. The Thermal Suite, added in the 2024 refresh, took over space that used to be a virtual reality center. It has heated loungers facing aft, Four Senses meditation loungers, a salt room, an aromatherapy steam room, a Finnish sauna, experience showers, an ice room, a cold plunge and a hot tub.

Danny's tip: “The heated loungers are my favorite, since I've had back issues for a long time. Pre-book your spa treatments, because sea days fill up first.”

The Waterfront & Specialty Dining

The Waterfront is an outdoor promenade on Deck 8 that wraps around the ship, with bars, lounge seating and heaters for Alaska. Several specialty restaurants have indoor and outdoor tables here. La Cucina serves Italian, Ocean Blue is the seafood specialty, and Cagney's Steakhouse wraps around the aft. Nearby you'll find Le Bistro for classic French, Food Republic for sushi and shareable plates ordered on an iPad, and Teppanyaki for dinner and a show.

Danny's tip: “I love dining al fresco, so when you get seated, ask for an outdoor table. I find Ocean Blue the hardest reservation to get, so book it early.”

Cavern Club & Entertainment on Norwegian Joy

Cavern Club & Entertainment

Named for the Liverpool club where the Beatles played, the Cavern Club hosts a Beatles tribute band that plays sets from different eras of the band, plus a full show in the Joy Theater. The stadium-style theater also hosts Broadway-style shows, game shows like Wheel of Fortune, and comedians. The Social is a comedy club that turns into a nightclub with silent disco, and Q Texas Smokehouse has live country music and dancing.

Danny's tip: “You do need to show up early for the Cavern Club, because the seats fill up.”

The Local & 678 Ocean Place

678 Ocean Place is Joy's three-deck heart, built around a sparkling chandelier. On top, The Local Bar & Grill is complimentary and open 24 hours, with breakfast, burgers, Reubens and late-night wings, overlooking the atrium's game shows and movies. Nearby are an arcade with bowling and basketball games, a large casino with an enclosed, ventilated smoking area, and the Skyline Bar. The complimentary Manhattan Room, Savor and Taste dining rooms are close by.

Danny's tip: “The Local is a spot I wish every cruise ship in the world had. I've been known to have chicken wings there at one, two or three in the morning.”

Signature Experiences on Joy

Vibe Beach Club

The 2024 refresh doubled this adults-only retreat, taking over the old laser tag arena. One pass covers your whole cruise, with bars, hot tubs, cabanas and plenty of loungers. It often sells out before you board.

Spice H2O

A complimentary adults-only escape with a big hot-tub-style pool, a bar, loungers and a large screen for the game. It's relaxed by day and turns into a nightclub-style party later in the evening.

▶ See it · 14:50

Food Republic

Danny's personal favorite specialty restaurant. Order shareable plates on an iPad, from sushi rolls to noodles, rice dishes and satays, or sit at the sushi bar to watch the chefs work. Seats off the side of the ship get great views.
