Norwegian Spirit

Norwegian’s adult-focused mid-size ship was renovated from bow to stern, adding Onda by Scarpetta, the adults-only Spice H2O, a new Thermal Suite and a comedy club, then sent on longer, more exotic itineraries. We’ve walked the decks and filmed the rooms, so you can see your room before you book.

A Classic Ship, Rebuilt for Grown-Ups

Norwegian Spirit was built in 1998 as SuperStar Leo, the first ship of the Leo Class, and joined Norwegian in 2004. In 2020 she came out of one of the most extensive renovations Danny has ever seen, with new restaurants, bars, lounges and staterooms throughout. She carries about 1,970 guests and has no kids’ clubs, so the whole ship leans toward adults. Highlights include Onda by Scarpetta, the Spinnaker Lounge, a Thermal Suite with heated stone loungers, and the adults-only Spice H2O off the stern.

Danny filmed this tour in 2022 in Seattle, just before an Alaska sailing. He starts on the pool deck and the Bier Garten, heads aft to Spice H2O and the Garden Cafe, then works down through the spa, Silk, the atrium, the Social comedy club, the casino and the dining rooms. Norwegian Spirit Highlights

Pool Deck & Bier Garten on Norwegian Spirit

Pool Deck & Bier Garten

The main pool is a good size for laps, with a hot tub on each corner, loungers all around and a bandstand for sailaway music. A large LED screen behind the stage shows movies and big games, and the Waves Pool Bar serves drinks poolside. One level up, the Bier Garten has a tented, Oktoberfest-style bar with light bites, and a jogging track loops the whole deck without cutting through the loungers.

Danny's tip: “When I hear that tropical music start at sailaway, I know I'm on vacation. I also love getting up early for a walk around the track.”

Spice H2O

Spice H2O is an adults-only lounge at the stern, with a pool in the middle, hot tubs on either side and tiers of extra-thick padded loungers facing the wake. The Garden Cafe spills down to it with more tables, and there's full bar service. During the renovation Norwegian removed the Splash Academy kids' zone, so Spirit has no youth programs and most of the ship is aimed at adults.

Danny's tip: “I love the loungers looking directly out the back of the ship. That's always my favorite view.”

Onda by Scarpetta on Norwegian Spirit

Onda by Scarpetta

Onda by Scarpetta was added in the renovation, bringing the New York Italian restaurant Scarpetta to sea. It sits high at the back of the ship to take in the views, with a full bar at the entrance, booths along one side and tables for two, four and larger groups. The menu runs from starters through handmade pastas and seafood entrees, and it isn't a big room, so tables go quickly.

Danny's tip: “I love the burrata and tomatoes, that's my favorite way to start. It's incredibly popular, so I highly recommend you reserve it ahead of time.”

Spinnaker Lounge

Danny's personal favorite spot on board sits at the very top and front of the ship, with views that wrap about 270 degrees. The renovation gave it a complete makeover. There's a bandstand for live music before and after dinner, trivia and lectures by day, a full bar and raised wing seating along the sides. The Humidor Cigar Lounge connects on the starboard side, with cognacs and floor-to-ceiling windows.

Danny's tip: “When you're sailing past glaciers or other scenic parts of the world, those raised wing seats are the first spots to fill up.”

Mandara Spa & Thermal Suite on Norwegian Spirit

Mandara Spa & Thermal Suite

The renovated Mandara Spa has a salon, a men's barbershop, manicure and pedicure stations with ocean views, and treatment rooms that include a couples' room. The Thermal Suite is a separate paid pass, with a dozen heated stone loungers facing the sea, a large Swiss shower walk-through, tropical rain showers, a sauna and a steam room. Pulse Fitness Center sits across the hall with plenty of equipment for the ship's size.

Danny's tip: “The hot stone loungers are one of my all-time favorites. Thermal Suite passes sell out and sea-day treatments fill up fast, so stop by the spa on the first day.”

Atrium & Magnum's

The atrium is the ship's hub, with duty-free shops, Guest Services, the shore excursions desk and a Starbucks-partnered café. A wall of LED screens hosts game shows, trivia and live music. On the level above, Magnum's Champagne & Wine Bar was new in the renovation, with Art Deco styling, a pianist and sometimes a band, and a long list of wines and champagnes that spills its music out over the atrium.

Danny's tip: “I always recommend picking up CruiseNext certificates while you're on board. Then just let us know when you get home and we'll take care of the details.”

The Local & Henry's Pub on Norwegian Spirit

The Local & Henry's Pub

The Local is a complimentary, 24-hour pub-style restaurant with plated meals, from French toast and eggs in the morning to wings in the middle of the night. It has a full bar with beers on tap, high-top tables and booths. Just forward of the atrium, Henry's Pub is a classic pub with ciders and beers on tap, booths and TVs for the game, and often a musician, karaoke or trivia.

Danny's tip: “The Local is a space I absolutely love on every Norwegian ship that has it. Late at night, the wings are what it's famous for.”

Cagney's & Le Bistro

Cagney's Steakhouse is the most popular specialty restaurant on board, an unapologetic steakhouse with every cut from ribeye to filet, plus seafood and classic sides. Le Bistro serves French classics like escargot in an elegant room made for celebrations. For complimentary dining, Taste and Windows are the two main dining rooms, both open seating, and Windows has big windows across the stern.

Danny's tip: “My all-time favorite at Cagney's is the tomahawk, and of course the OMG butterscotch cheesecake. You're going to want to pre-book it.”

Signature Experiences on Spirit

Silk, Sushi & Teppanyaki

Silk is a three-in-one Asian restaurant: a main room with Chinese, Japanese and fusion dishes, a sushi bar Danny calls his happy place, and three large teppanyaki tables. Pre-book teppanyaki, it's one of the most popular options.

The Social Comedy & Nightclub

All the way forward on Deck 7, the reimagined Social is a lounge and full bar that turns into a comedy club with stage-facing seating, then a nightclub later in the evening. The decor echoes Norwegian's newest ships.

▶ See it · 30:32

Bier Garten

Up on Deck 13, the Bier Garten borrows its look from Oktoberfest, with a tented bar, light bites, lounge sofas and tables for two or four. It's an easy spot to grab a drink with friends and step out into the sun.
