The Final Royal Class Ship, and the Most Refined

Discovery Princess was handed over by Fincantieri in Monfalcone, Italy, in January 2022 as the sixth and final Royal Class ship, after Royal, Regal, Majestic, Sky and Enchanted Princess. She takes what worked on her sisters and polishes it, from the two Sky Suites with 270-degree balcony views to the Enclave thermal suite and the MedallionClass app that lets you order food and drinks anywhere on board.

Danny has spent more than 200 days at sea with Princess. He started sailing the line as a kid with his grandparents, and now he brings his own daughter along. He walks you through Discovery from the top-deck pools down to the Lotus Spa. Watch the full tour below, or jump straight to the part of the ship you care about most.

Discovery Princess Highlights

Pool Deck & Movies Under the Stars on Discovery Princess

Pool Deck & Movies Under the Stars

The main pool deck has two pools big enough for laps, three hot tubs, and loungers in both sun and shade that face the giant Movies Under the Stars screen, a concept Princess pioneered. First-run films and big games play at night, with popcorn, warm cookies and milk, and blankets on Alaska sailings. Pool bars sit on either side, with Slice Pizzeria, the Salty Dog Grill and Swirls soft-serve close by.

Danny's tip: “The pools are big enough for laps. I'd do them in the morning or later in the evening, because it gets a little busy during the day.”

The Retreat & The Sanctuary

The Retreat is an adults-only pool area with a lap-size pool, a ledge for dipping your toes in and the Retreat Bar. One level up are two hot tubs and glass-screened cabana-style loungers, free but first come, first served. At the very front of the ship, The Sanctuary is a paid adults-only space, sold by the half day, full day or whole cruise, with food and drink service, a soaking tub, private cabanas and open-air spa cabanas.

Danny's tip: “The Sanctuary has gotten so popular that I'd consider the full-cruise option, and get it as soon as you get on board.”

World Fresh Marketplace on Discovery Princess

World Fresh Marketplace

The buffet is massive, with matching lines on both sides and smaller stations in the middle for salads, cereal, cheese, fruit and made-to-order sandwiches. Themed dinners rotate, from Italy to Asia, and there is good Indian food too. The Pastry Shop doubles as a coffee bar, with gluten-free and sugar-free desserts. Out back, the Wake View Bar and an infinity-edge pool look over the ship’s wake, Danny’s favorite spot on any ship.

Danny's tip: “Go all the way to the back line. A lot of people stop along the way, so I get quicker, easier service back there, then take my food outside to the Wake View.”

Camp Discovery

Princess’s youth program splits kids by age, with counselors who have backgrounds in child development. The Treehouse (ages 3 to 7) has reading time, arts and crafts, an Xbox, a jungle gym with a slide and an outdoor tricycle track. The Lodge (8 to 12) adds air hockey, foosball, skee-ball and science experiments. Teens get the Beach House, with surfboard tables, video games and a dance floor. Programming ties into Discovery and Animal Planet.

Danny's tip: “I was a middle school teacher for over 10 years, and I know that if every member of the family has their needs met, it's going to be a phenomenal vacation for everyone.”

Crown Grill on Discovery Princess

Crown Grill

Crown Grill is Princess’s classic specialty steakhouse, with an open kitchen you can smell as you walk in. The menu covers steakhouse favorites, from a wide range of steaks to chicken, fish and seafood. Booths and tables suit couples and larger groups, and a private Wine Room works well for birthdays and anniversaries. Next door, the Crown Grill Bar has a piano, big sofas and quieter corners for a drink before or after dinner.

Danny's tip: “For me it's all about the bone-in rib eye. If you're celebrating something, check as soon as you board whether you can dine in the Wine Room.”

The Piazza

Modeled on an Italian town square, the Piazza spans decks five to seven, with glass spiral staircases, a chandelier, and live music every day. The International Café serves pastries, breakfast sandwiches, quiches and pot pies around the clock, next to a coffee bar. Good Spirits at Sea pours Rob Floyd’s mixology creations and hosts classes, and the gelato bar makes waffle cones fresh. Bellini’s Bar and the Ocean Terrace Seafood Bar look down from above.

Danny's tip: “The Piazza coffee shop gets busy in the morning, so a lot of times I'll grab my coffee at the buffet or the Princess Live! Café instead.”

Sabatini's on Discovery Princess

Sabatini’s

Sabatini’s Italian Trattoria sits across from Guest Services, with a look-through kitchen at the entrance where cooks make fresh pasta every morning. The menu runs from handmade pastas to steaks and seafood, all built around a classic Italian meal. Seating ranges from booths and window tables to tables for two and four that can be pushed together for big groups. Danny has dined at Sabatini’s two or three dozen times.

Danny's tip: “It's incredibly popular, and I find it's usually the first specialty restaurant to fill up. Reserve early, and ask for a window table when you book.”

Lotus Spa & The Enclave

The Lotus Spa covers massages, facials, seaweed wraps and acupuncture, plus a salon, a barber shop and pedicure chairs. Couples villas add a steam shower, a soaking tub and a lounge for an all-day treatment. The Enclave thermal suite, sold by the day or the cruise, has 12 heated stone loungers, a large therapy pool with bubble benches and waterfalls, a hammam, a steam room, a sauna and hot-and-cold experience showers.

Danny's tip: “I'd get the Enclave for the full cruise. You can buy it ahead of time, and it does sell out, so don't wait until you get on board.”

Signature Experiences on Discovery Princess

The SeaWalk

A glass-floored walkway cantilevered off the side of the ship, with a view straight down to the ocean. It's a Royal Class signature, and not for the faint of heart, but the view is like nothing else on board.

Take Five Jazz Lounge

A bright, quiet spot to read by day that turns into a jazz club at night, with a baby grand piano, a marble bar and several live sets each evening. Churchill's Cigar Lounge sits right next door.

▶ See it · 41:05

Gigi's Pizzeria

Set above the Piazza, Gigi's tosses pizzas fresh from authentic Italian recipes, with gluten-free options, salads, antipasti and soups. There are booths, big tables for groups, and seating outdoors too.
