Royal Princess

Princess Cruises’ first Royal Class ship introduced the design the whole class is built on, from the three-deck Piazza and Princess Live! to the Enclave thermal suite and the pool deck’s dancing fountains. We’ve walked the decks and filmed the rooms, so you can see your room before you book.

The Ship That Started the Royal Class

Royal Princess entered service in June 2013 as the lead ship of the Royal Class, and Danny calls her the next evolution of design for Princess. She was christened by the then Duchess of Cambridge, now the Princess of Wales, and carries 3,560 guests. She keeps the Princess favorites, like Movies Under the Stars, Crown Grill and Sabatini’s, and adds features that debuted on this ship, including the SeaWalk, a glass-floored walkway that extends past the side of the ship.

Danny grew up cruising with Princess on the West Coast and sailed on the original Royal Princess, christened by Princess Diana, as a teenager and again in his 20s. On this ship he starts above the pool deck and works his way through the kids’ clubs, the Piazza, the dining rooms and the Lotus Spa. Royal Princess Highlights

Pool Deck & Movies Under the Stars on Royal Princess

Pool Deck & Movies Under the Stars

The main pool deck pairs a round pool with a fountain feature, one of the signatures of Royal Princess, and a long rectangular pool that works well for morning laps. At night the fountains dance with lights. The giant Movies Under the Stars screen shows first-run films and big games, with blankets, popcorn, and cookies and milk. Tiered sun decks, shaded seating, hot tubs, two pool bars, Prego Pizzeria and the Trident Grill round it out.

Danny's tip: “One of my favorite things to do here during the day is watch the big game on the Movies Under the Stars screen. At night, the fountains turn into a light show that's stunning.”

The Retreat & The Sanctuary

Just forward of the main pool, The Retreat is an adults-only sun deck with a pool big enough for laps, first-come, first-served cabanas and day beds, and its own bar. For an upgrade, The Sanctuary sits in the crown of the ship with 270-degree views. It's a calm, spa-style space with heavily padded loungers for one or two, infused waters and spa music. Passes are sold by the day or for the whole cruise, and cabanas cost extra.

Danny's tip: “If you want a massage in the open-air spa cabanas, tell the spa you want it in the Sanctuary when you book. On scenic sailings, like Glacier Bay or the fjords of Norway, look for the special Sanctuary packages.”

World Fresh Marketplace & Horizon Terrace on Royal Princess

World Fresh Marketplace & Horizon Terrace

The buffet, signed Horizon Court when Danny filmed and now listed by Princess as World Fresh Marketplace, is the truly casual option for breakfast, lunch, dinner and bites into the evening. Matching lines on both sides keep it moving, with egg stations, made-to-order salads and a bakery in the middle. The pastry shop doubles as a coffee bar, and Swirls serves soft serve. Out back, the Horizon Terrace and the Outrigger Bar face the wake.

Danny's tip: “Especially on boarding day, I tell everybody to head all the way to the back. Then I grab my food and sit out on the Horizon Terrace. The Outrigger Bar is where you'll most likely find me on this ship.”

Camp Discovery

Camp Discovery is built in partnership with Discovery and Animal Planet, so programming ties into where the ship is sailing, like whales and bears on the way to Alaska. The Treehouse, for ages 3 to 7, has a slide, a reading nook, arts and crafts and an outdoor trike area. The Lodge, for 8 to 12, has skee-ball, foosball and video games. Teens 13 to 17 get the Beach House, which turns into their own nightclub.

Danny's tip: “Come up and check your kids into the kids club on your very first day. Sync up with everyone who'll be checking them in and out. When I cruise, my parents get that access.”

Crown Grill & Wheelhouse Bar on Royal Princess

Crown Grill & Wheelhouse Bar

The Wheelhouse Bar is a classic Princess venue, themed with ship pictures and a map wrapped around the bar, and live piano music before dinner. Next door, the Crown Grill steakhouse has an open kitchen, so the room fills with the smell of the grill. Expect shrimp cocktail, black and blue French onion soup, seafood, chops and steaks. Seating runs from tables for two to booths for eight, plus a wine room that seats 10.

Danny's tip: “For me it's always going to be the ribeye. Save room for the salted caramel crème brûlée cheesecake. You'll thank me later.”

The Piazza

Modeled on an Italian town square, the Piazza is the heart and soul of the ship, spanning decks five to seven with two glass staircases and a bandstand for live music and DJs. Around it sit Crooners piano bar, the Ocean Terrace Seafood Bar for sushi, Alfredo's Pizzeria with its real pizza oven, Bellini's, Vines wine bar, Good Spirits at Sea with mixologist Rob Floyd, Gelato and the International Café for coffee and bites all day.

Danny's tip: “You know I love sushi. The Ocean Terrace Seafood Bar, looking out over the Piazza, is one of my favorite perches on this ship.”

Main Dining Rooms & Chef's Table Lumiere on Royal Princess

Main Dining Rooms & Chef's Table Lumiere

Royal Princess has three main dining rooms, Concerto, Symphony and Allegro, all with musical themes, frescos and murals. Concerto is home to Reserve Collection dining for full-suite and Reserve Collection Mini-Suite guests, with extra menu items and expedited seating. Allegro is the tricky one to find, reached only through the aft elevators or stairs. Each room has a special table used for tasting menus, including Chef's Table Lumiere, a wine-paired dinner at extra cost.

Danny's tip: “If you love wine and great food, make sure you reserve Chef's Table Lumiere as soon as you get on board.”

Lotus Spa & The Enclave

The Lotus Spa covers massages, wraps, a med-spa and even acupuncture, plus a full-service salon with teeth whitening, manicures and pedicures. A relaxation room with infused waters starts each visit, and couples villas add a shared shower and a large soaking tub. The Enclave thermal suite centers on a hydrotherapy pool with jets, ringed by warm stone loungers, experience showers, a hammam, a laconium and a caldarium for a full circuit.

Danny's tip: “I've had a bad back for a while, so I love the harder jets in the Enclave pool and the warm stone loungers. My personal favorite treatment is the hot stone massage.”

Signature Experiences on Royal Princess

The Fountain Show

The round pool on the main pool deck has a fountain feature that Danny calls one of the signatures of Royal Princess. By day it's a place to cool off, and at night the fountains dance with lights beneath the Movies Under the Stars screen.

Wedding Chapel

Few ships still have a dedicated wedding chapel, and Royal Princess does. Princess hosts more weddings and vow renewals than any other cruise line, and the chapel also works for small group events and conferences at sea.

The Royal Godmother Display

Royal Princess was christened by the then Duchess of Cambridge, now the Princess of Wales. A display on board shows her portrait, the dress she wore for the christening and memorabilia from the day, a fun tie to the British royal family.
