A Grand Class Classic That Celebrates Love

Ruby Princess entered service in November 2008 as the last of Princess’s Grand Class ships, built to the updated Crown design she shares with Crown Princess and Emerald Princess. She was christened by Trista and Ryan Sutter, and she still celebrates romance with a wedding chapel on board. Guests get the Princess classics: Movies Under the Stars, the adults-only Sanctuary, the Lotus Spa, the Italian-style Piazza, Sabatini’s and Crown Grill.

Danny calls Ruby a ship he personally loves. It was one of his family’s first cruises together, and he and his wife have played plenty of ping pong on board. He walks you through the ship on an Alaska sailing, from the pool decks to the dining rooms. Watch the full tour below, or jump straight to the part of the ship you care about most.

Ruby Princess Highlights

Neptune's Reef & Movies Under the Stars on Ruby Princess

Neptune’s Reef & Movies Under the Stars

Neptune’s Reef is big enough for morning or evening laps, with a low ledge all the way around for dipping your toes in, plus hot tubs nearby. Above it, stadium-style seating faces a massive LED screen for Movies Under the Stars, an idea Princess pioneered. First-run films and big sporting events play here at no extra cost, and at night the crew brings out blankets, popcorn, and cookies and milk.

Danny's tip: “I remember watching the Super Bowl up there a few years ago. I always love to cruise at Thanksgiving, because you get a lot of football games out of that cruise.”

Lotus Pool & The Sanctuary

Tucked between the spa and the fitness center, the Lotus Pool has two hot tubs, extra-comfy loungers and stadium-style seating. It’s also the entrance to The Sanctuary, an adults-only retreat up forward with loungers, tables and daybeds for two. Guests can reserve it for a half day, a full day or the whole cruise, with upgraded service, Bento Box delivery, food and drinks. Spa Cabanas nearby are booked separately at the spa.

Danny's tip: “The Lotus Pool is one of my favorite spots on Princess's classic ships. A lot of people don't find it until later in the cruise.”

World Fresh Marketplace on Ruby Princess

World Fresh Marketplace

The buffet in the Horizon Court is the quick, casual option for breakfast, lunch, dinner and late snacks. Stations rotate through soups, salads, breads from the bakery, carved meats, hot dishes and seafood, which gets an upgrade on Alaska sailings, plus a big dessert spread. Window tables for two and four line the sides. A second, identical buffet sits aft, next to a full bar and a quieter pool with views over the wake.

Danny's tip: “I always go all the way aft. You get more space and more open seats, with the same food. Then I take my plate outside to a lounger facing the back of the ship.”

Camp Discovery

Princess’s youth program has a dedicated space for each age group. The Treehouse has a playhouse with a slide, a jungle gym, reading time and arts and crafts for the youngest cruisers. The Lodge (ages 8 to 12) adds video games, skee-ball, foosball and science experiments. Teens 13 to 17 get the Beach House, with air hockey, a movie area and a lounge. Programming with Discovery and Animal Planet ties into the destinations.

Lotus Spa on Ruby Princess

Lotus Spa

The Lotus Spa covers massages, facials, wraps and acupuncture, along with a full beauty salon, a barber for shaves and haircuts, and manicure and pedicure stations. Couples treatment rooms are a favorite on the Love Boat. The Thermal Suite, sold by the day or for the whole cruise, has heated stone loungers, steam rooms and experience showers. The fitness center faces forward over the bow, with classes from yoga to spinning.

Danny's tip: “Pre-book your treatments, then stop by on the first day to tour the spa. Hot stones are my personal favorite. If you love the Thermal Suite, book it as soon as you get on board, because it fills up.”

Sabatini’s

Sabatini’s is Princess’s classic Italian trattoria, set aft and fully redone in the ship’s recent refurbishment. The menu runs from antipasti to handmade pastas, mains and desserts, and plenty of guests book it more than once. Seating ranges from tables for two by the windows to booths for six, plus a family sharing room tucked in back. In the morning, suite guests enjoy an upgraded breakfast here.

Danny's tip: “Pre-book it, because it's one of the most popular options on board. If you want the family sharing room, ask for it as soon as you make the reservation.”

Wheelhouse Bar & Salty Dog Gastropub on Ruby Princess

Wheelhouse Bar & Salty Dog Gastropub

The Wheelhouse Bar is a big, classic lounge built around a huge horseshoe bar, with lounge seating, tables for two and four, and a bandstand for live music. In the early evening it becomes the Salty Dog Gastropub, serving upgraded burgers and pub fare for an extra charge. Just outside, the Promenade Deck wraps the ship, a great spot for a sea-day walk or for watching glaciers and fjords slide by.

Danny's tip: “The Wheelhouse is my favorite of the Princess lounges, and some of the best bartenders in the business work behind that bar.”

▶ Watch in Danny's tour · 26:34

Crown Grill

Crown Grill is Princess’s classic specialty steakhouse (a cover charge applies, or it’s included with some packages), with an unapologetic menu of favorite cuts, from filet to surf and turf, plus appetizers, soups and salads. In regions like Alaska, an upgraded seafood menu comes along with it. Booths and tables for two wrap the windows around a central bar. In the recent refurbishment, Princess upgraded the restaurant, right down to new plates and silverware.

Danny's tip: “Those who know, know: the rib eye is where it's at.”

Signature Experiences on Ruby Princess

The Piazza

Modeled on an Italian town square, the Piazza is the social heart of the ship, with a mosaic floor, a chandelier, and live music. Danny stops at the International Café for breakfast sandwiches most mornings.

▶ See it · 28:03

Wedding Chapel

Ruby was dedicated to love from the start, and she still has a wedding chapel on board. Princess's Love Boat roots make it a natural place to say "I do" or renew your vows at sea.

▶ See it · 24:49

Skywalkers Nightclub

Set high atop the ship, Skywalkers has windows wrapping more than 270 degrees. It's a quiet spot to read and take in the scenery by day, and a DJ-driven dance club with a lit floor at night.
