A Classic Princess Ship Built to Sail the World

Sapphire Princess was built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Japan and entered service in 2004 alongside her only true sister, Diamond Princess. The two swapped names during construction after a shipyard fire. She was christened in Seattle, the first cruise ship ever christened in that port, and has since sailed Alaska, South America, Europe and Asia. Since Danny filmed in late 2023, Princess has turned the Savoy dining room into Crown Grill and the Internet Café into Makoto Ocean.

Danny sailed Sapphire for the first time on her inaugural voyage and has been back many times since. He and his wife have cruised on her for nearly all of their 20 years together. He walks you through the ship from the top-deck pools and the Sanctuary down to the Piazza, the dining rooms and the Promenade Deck. Sapphire Princess Highlights

Pool Deck & Movies Under the Stars on Sapphire Princess

Pool Deck & Movies Under the Stars

The main outdoor pool deck has a large pool, two hot tubs and loungers in both sun and shade, with a pool bar on the deck and another one level up. A grill serves burgers and hot dogs on one side, pizza is on the other, and an ice cream counter sits nearby. Higher up, the sun decks face the giant Movies Under the Stars screen, a concept Princess debuted, with popcorn and blankets on cooler evenings.

Danny's tip: “The very top of the sun deck is one of my secret spots to watch Movies Under the Stars.”

The Sanctuary & Lotus Spa Pool

At the very top front of the ship, The Sanctuary is an adults-only retreat guests can reserve for a fee, by the day or for the whole cruise. Expect padded loungers and day beds, elevated service, all-day food such as breakfast and bento boxes, and a couples' massage area. Numbers are kept low so it stays quiet. Just below, the Lotus Spa pool has a soaking pool, hot tubs and Asian-inspired design, steps from the spa.

Danny's tip: “The Sanctuary is an upgrade I highly recommend, especially on scenic days like the glaciers in Alaska. It's limited each day, so I snag a spot as soon as I board.”

Horizon Court on Sapphire Princess

Horizon Court

The Horizon Court is the casual buffet, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with stations repeated on both sides of the ship. Look for a large salad bar, charcuterie, grab-and-go sandwiches, soups, a carving station and international dishes such as Indian curries. A kids' corner serves mac and cheese, tater tots and grilled cheese. Mornings bring an egg station, omelets and made-to-order waffles and pancakes, with complimentary coffee, tea and juices close by.

Danny's tip: “I always recommend going all the way to the back. You'll find very few people there, especially on boarding day, plus booth seating and a bar outside.”

Skywalkers Nightclub

Skywalkers sits at the very top aft of the ship, with views all the way around. It's a nightclub at heart, entered by escalator, with a DJ booth, a full bar, a large lit dance floor and booths that seat big groups together. TVs come on for sporting events and karaoke. By day it's one of the quietest spaces on board, with plenty of natural light, and it also hosts activities and get-togethers.

Danny's tip: “During the day, Skywalkers is a great place to sneak away and read a book. My wife likes to come up here to sew.”

Camp Discovery on Sapphire Princess

Camp Discovery

Camp Discovery splits kids by age, with programming from Discovery and Animal Planet tied to the places the ship visits. The Treehouse (ages 3 to 7) has crafts, video games, a reading corner, a puppet theater and an outdoor play area. The Lodge (8 to 12) adds lounge seating, Nintendo Switch stations, foosball and science experiments. Teens 13 to 17 get the Beach House, with a stage for karaoke and dance parties, a DJ booth and movie nights.

Danny's tip: “Stop by on boarding day to check the kids in. I authorize the family members who can pick them up, so while my wife and I are at dinner, my dad can collect them.”

Lotus Spa & Fitness Center

The Lotus Spa covers massages, wraps, med-spa treatments, a full salon, teeth whitening, manicures and pedicures. The thermal suite (extra cost, by the day or for the cruise) has heated ergonomic loungers, a gentle sauna, aromatic steam and several experience showers. The locker rooms have their own complimentary sauna and steam room. The fitness center offers free weights, circuit machines and cardio, plus a studio for classes like TRX and spin.

Danny's tip: “Sea days are always busier than port days, so I stop by the spa on the very first day to lock in treatments. The thermal suite is one of my favorite parts of the spa.”

The Piazza & Crooners on Sapphire Princess

The Piazza & Crooners

Modeled on an Italian town square, the three-story Piazza is the ship's gathering place, with live music through the day and evening. Good Spirits serves specialty cocktails and hosts mixology demonstrations, the International Café has specialty coffee and light bites around the clock, Alfredo's Pizzeria bakes pizzas in an open kitchen, and Vines pours wine for tastings. Up above, the Crooners piano bar overlooks it all.

Danny's tip: “Crooners is my personal favorite bar on board, and it's where we tend to gather in the evenings. For breakfast, I like the classic egg sandwich at the International Café.”

▶ Watch in Danny's tour · 26:43

Sabatini's

Sabatini's is the ship's Italian specialty restaurant (extra cost), open for dinner every evening, and suite guests can enjoy an elevated breakfast here too. An open kitchen sends the aromas your way as you walk in, and you can watch the chefs slicing cured meats. The menu runs from antipasti through an extensive selection of pastas to mains and dessert. Danny has dined here dozens of times and says he has had a great meal every time.

Danny's tip: “I usually start with the fried calamari, and I always end up ordering the carbonara.”

Signature Experiences on Sapphire Princess

The Conservatory

An enclosed, climate-controlled pool deck with a full-size pool for laps, two hot tubs, padded loungers and ping-pong one level up. Danny calls it a real win on cooler sailings like Alaska, whatever the weather outside.

▶ See it · 8:02

Makoto Ocean

New since Danny filmed: in November 2025 the former Internet Café became Makoto Ocean, chef Makoto Okuwa's Japanese restaurant (extra cost). On camera in 2023, Danny guessed this space could become a sushi bar.

▶ See it · 43:12

Promenade Deck

Outside on the Promenade Deck, extra-comfy seats sit close to the water. After transatlantics, 30-day voyages and short getaways on Princess, Danny says this is one of the spots he keeps coming back to for fresh ocean air.
