Radiance of the Seas

Royal Caribbean’s original Radiance Class ship is wrapped in glass, with an adults-only Solarium under a retractable roof, Samba Grill and Izumi for dinner, and pool tables that stay level at sea. We’ve walked the decks and filmed the rooms, so you can see your room before you book.

The Ship That Gave Its Name to the Radiance Class

Radiance of the Seas entered service in April 2001 as the first of four Radiance Class ships, alongside Brilliance, Serenade and Jewel of the Seas. She was built to fit the original Panama Canal and to sail scenic regions like Alaska, so there is glass almost everywhere: ocean-facing glass elevators, a Solarium with a retractable roof, and a Viking Crown with floor-to-ceiling windows. Danny calls the Radiance Class one of his favorite ship classes ever designed.

Danny filmed this tour in 2022, starting on the pool and sports decks, then working through the Windjammer, Izumi and Samba Grill, the Viking Crown, Adventure Ocean and the spa, before finishing in the Aurora Theater, the Schooner Bar and the Centrum. Some venues have changed since filming, and this page reflects what Royal Caribbean lists today. Watch the full tour below, or jump straight to the part of the ship you care about most.

Radiance of the Seas Highlights

Sports Deck & Mini Golf on Radiance of the Seas

Sports Deck & Mini Golf

Up top, the complimentary rock climbing wall rises above the aft sports deck, a Royal Caribbean signature that started on Voyager of the Seas. Behind it, the mini golf course wraps around the back of the ship like a giant horseshoe, with ocean views from every hole. The half-size sports court hosts three-on-three basketball and now pickleball, and Challengers Arcade (extra cost) sits nearby. There's also a shuffleboard court and quiet loungers tucked away for the views.

Danny's tip: “The mini golf course is a phenomenal place to be in the scenic areas. You can even come up here to check out the glaciers.”

Solarium & Park Café

The adults-only Solarium is a climate-controlled retreat under a retractable glass roof, so it works in the Caribbean sun or on a chilly Alaska morning. It has a full pool with a sit-in ledge, a cabana-style hot tub, loungers all around and its own bar. Each Radiance Class Solarium is decorated a little differently, and this one has huge elephant sculptures. Tucked in the corner, Park Café serves sandwiches, made-to-order salads and cookies, all complimentary.

Danny's tip: “One little secret: the Solarium Bar has an espresso maker, so if the coffee shop is busy, it's a great place to start your day. On boarding day, I start with the roast beef Kummelweck sandwich at Park Café.”

Izumi on Radiance of the Seas

Izumi

Izumi is Radiance's Asian restaurant, with a full sushi bar, booths and window tables wrapping around the space. Danny believes it's the largest Izumi in the fleet. The menu covers sushi and sashimi, specialty rolls and Japanese dishes like chicken karaage and beef or chicken teriyaki, and the kitchen handled a gluten-free, seafood-free guest in Danny's group with ease. It's an incredibly popular spot and comes at an extra cost, alone or as part of a dining package.

Danny's tip: “Izumi is my happy place. I sit at the sushi bar for pre-dinner sushi, and sometimes post-dinner sushi too. My favorite is the champagne lobster roll, or the spider roll, or the rainbow roll.”

Samba Grill & Windjammer

Samba Grill is a Brazilian-style steakhouse where passadores bring skewers of steak, filet, sausage and pork loin to the table, as much as you like, after a stop at the starter buffet. It comes at an extra cost. Next door, the complimentary Windjammer serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, with grill stations, pizza, made-to-order items and desserts. Its aft outdoor terrace is a Radiance Class favorite for dining al fresco, and the Dog House serves gourmet hot dogs nearby.

Danny's tip: “Samba Grill is very popular, so reserve it as soon as you arrive. When I'm traveling with my family, the Windjammer is my favorite spot to eat most meals.”

Viking Crown & Suite Lounge on Radiance of the Seas

Viking Crown & Suite Lounge

The Viking Crown sits at the top of the ship, wrapped in floor-to-ceiling windows. By day it's a bright, quiet lounge; at night a DJ takes over the dance floor, and a pianist plays at cocktail hour. When Danny filmed, it was home to the first rotating bar on a cruise ship, which debuted on Radiance. Nearby, the Suite Lounge gives suite guests a concierge, continental breakfast, evening bites and drinks, and a private outdoor deck.

Danny's tip: “Look straight down through the window at the top of the atrium. You can see all the way down to Deck 4, eight floors below.”

Adventure Ocean

Adventure Ocean runs from Royal Babies and Tots, for little ones from 6 months, all the way to a teen club for ages 12 to 17. Kids 3 to 5 and 6 to 11 have their own spaces with arts and crafts, science activities, reading corners, video games and movie time, each with its own restroom. Babies and Tots staff change diapers, feed and put little ones down for naps. Teens get a dance floor, DJ booth, foosball and video games.

Danny's tip: “Come up on boarding day to sign the kids in and choose who can pick them up. On our last cruise I signed up close family friends and my parents.”

Schooner Bar & Pool Tables on Radiance of the Seas

Schooner Bar & Pool Tables

The Schooner Bar is a nautical piano bar with a big wraparound bar on two levels, lounge seating and nightly sing-alongs. Just past it are two gyroscopically stabilized pool tables, a Radiance first that keeps the table level even when the sea is rolling. Chops Grille, the classic steakhouse, and Giovanni's Table, for Italian, sit on either side. The two-story Cascades dining room is just forward, with My Time or set-time dining.

Danny's tip: “This is probably my favorite bar on any Royal Caribbean ship, because of the size of the Schooner Bar on the Radiance Class. For the pool tables, just ask the bartender for the balls and cues.”

Aurora Theater & Nightlife

Named for the northern lights, the Aurora Theater stages full production shows, with City of Dreams and Piano Man listed today, plus comedians and guest entertainers, all included in the fare. Radiance also has a dedicated cinema with stadium seating. The Quill & Compass pub has live music nightly, the Vegas-style casino has a center bar, and the Colony Club hosts dancing, trivia and bingo, with the Chef's Table in a private corner.

Danny's tip: “The box seats are first come, first served, and they go very quickly. The section in the middle below the sound booth is reserved for suite guests.”

Signature Experiences on Radiance

Self-Leveling Pool Tables

Radiance was the first cruise ship with gyroscopically stabilized pool tables. They stay level with the horizon as the ship moves, so you can play on a rolling sea. Ask the bartender at the Schooner Bar for access.

Glass Everywhere

The Centrum's glass elevators face the ocean, and walls of windows run through the Viking Crown, Champagne Bar and Solarium. Built for Alaska and other scenic regions, Radiance puts the views front and center.

▶ See it · 40:29

Samba Grill

Danny calls it a very unique option on Radiance: a Brazilian-style steakhouse with tableside skewers of steak, filet, sausage and pork loin, plus a starter buffet. It's popular, so reserve it early.
