Serenade of the Seas

Royal Caribbean’s Radiance Class classic is wrapped in acres of glass, with a glass-roofed Solarium, a two-story dining room and one of the largest Schooner Bars in the fleet, which is why she shines in Alaska. We’ve walked the decks and filmed the rooms, so you can see your room before you book.

A Radiance Class Favorite Built for the View

Serenade of the Seas entered service in August 2003 as the third of four Radiance Class ships, sized to fit through the original Panama Canal so she can sail Alaska in summer and warmer waters in winter. Danny calls her just about the perfect cruise ship design, with classic lounges, a huge Schooner Bar and floor-to-ceiling glass nearly everywhere. Updates since launch added Izumi, the retro R Bar and a dedicated Suite Lounge, and in 2023 and 2024 she sailed Royal’s 274-night Ultimate World Cruise.

Danny filmed this tour in Seattle in 2021, just before an Alaska sailing. He starts on the pool deck and Solarium, climbs to the sports deck and Viking Crown, then works through Adventure Ocean, the spa, the theater, the specialty restaurants and the Schooner Bar, before finishing in the Centrum and the main dining room. Serenade of the Seas Highlights

Pool Deck & Sky Bar on Serenade of the Seas

Pool Deck & Sky Bar

The main pool sits in the middle of deck 11, with hot tubs, tiered loungers all around and a pool bar on the far side. A large screen added in a recent update shows movies and big games, like the Monday Night Football game playing the night Danny filmed. One deck up, the Sky Bar serves the loungers along the running track, which wraps all the way around the front of the ship for sweeping views.

Danny's tip: “The Sky Bar is my spot for a game or a movie on the big screen, because you can see directly across. It's also perfect for people watching.”

Solarium

The Solarium is one of the most-loved spaces on the Radiance Class. A glass dome keeps it climate controlled in Alaska or northern Europe, and it can open on a beautiful day. Inside are a main pool, a shallow wading area where you can sit with your toes in the water, a hot tub, a bridge with two large elephant statues, and jungle sounds piped in. A bistro and a full bar sit on either side, and the space is adults only.

Danny's tip: “I love that you can sit on the edge of the shallow pool and just put your toes in the water.”

Rock Wall, Sports Court & Mini Golf on Serenade of the Seas

Rock Wall, Sports Court & Mini Golf

Up on deck 13, the rock climbing wall was one of the first Royal Caribbean ever put on a ship. Nearby are a half basketball court, a kids' area with a waterslide, splash pad and wading pool, and a complimentary mini golf course that wraps around the stern in a horseshoe, with views out over the wake. The Challengers Arcade on deck 12 costs extra, so it's worth setting a budget with the kids.

Danny's tip: “Mini golf is one of my all-time favorite things to do on a cruise ship. It's complimentary, it's always available, and the views from the top back of the ship are incredible.”

Windjammer Café & Izumi

Danny thinks the Radiance Class has the best Windjammer layout in the fleet. The buffet has windows down both sides, separate food stations, an omelet station, a dessert bar with soft-serve, and outdoor seating both forward and aft, where the views are some of the best on the ship. Rita's Cantina sits just outside. Up at the very top aft, Izumi replaced the old Seafood Shack and serves sushi and Japanese dishes at an extra cost.

Danny's tip: “You'll always find me eating outside, al fresco. And I come to Izumi just about every single day, maybe for a snack before dinner and maybe one after.”

Viking Crown Lounges on Serenade of the Seas

Viking Crown Lounges

The Viking Crown holds three spaces. The Vortex lounge and nightclub has panoramic windows that are great for glacier viewing, a big dance floor, a piano and a DJ late into the night, and Danny points out its bar rotates. The Diamond Lounge serves Crown & Anchor Diamond members and above with a concierge and an evening cocktail hour. Nearby, the old Hollywood karaoke bar is now the Suite Lounge, with its own outdoor terrace.

Danny's tip: “My wife and I have so many memories of dancing on this dance floor. The Vortex is one of our favorite spaces in the whole Royal Caribbean fleet.”

Vitality Spa & Fitness Center

The Vitality Spa offers massages, facials, a salon, and manicure and pedicure stations set right against the windows. On this class, the men's and women's changing rooms each have a sauna and steam room that every guest can use. The thermal suite, sold as a day or full-cruise pass, adds heated stone loungers facing the sea, a large steam room and rain showers. The full fitness center and aerobics studio sit one level up.

Danny's tip: “If you want a treatment at a specific time, book it the very first day. The thermal suite passes sell out pretty quick too, so stop by on day one.”

Schooner Bar & Safari Club on Serenade of the Seas

Schooner Bar & Safari Club

The Schooner Bar is Danny's favorite bar on every Royal Caribbean ship, and the Radiance Class has the largest ones in the fleet, with ship models, cozy booths, ocean windows and a piano bar with sing-alongs and trivia. Just past it are the self-leveling pool tables, which stay flat as the ship moves. All the way aft, the Safari Club hosts bingo, karaoke, the adults-only Quest game show and dancing, with wraparound windows.

Danny's tip: “Do the Quest when you're on board. It's an adults-only game show, and you're sure to have an incredible time.”

Centrum & Main Dining Room

The Centrum rises through the ship, with glass elevators and stage shows you can watch from several levels. The retro R Bar anchors the bottom, and Café Latte-tudes serves Lavazza coffee, cookies and grab-and-go bites a deck up. The two-story main dining room has a grand staircase, a waterfall feature and a grand piano, and it is included for dinner every night. The main theater stages Royal's Vibeology and Stage to Screen.

Danny's tip: “Try to visit Guest Services in the middle of your cruise. The first and last days are the busiest, because that's when everyone is checking in and checking out.”

Signature Experiences on Serenade

Chef's Table

A small, wine-paired dinner hosted near the Safari Club, with five courses led by the chef. The long table seats about 10 to 12, and Danny loves it for meeting new people. Seats are limited, so reserve early.

▶ See it · 38:58

Self-Leveling Pool Tables

A Radiance Class signature: billiards tables on gyroscopes that stay level even when the ship moves. Danny says they were the first in the industry, and he's played a ton of games on them.

▶ See it · 36:42

Acres of Glass

When she was designed, Serenade had more glass than any cruise ship before her. Glass elevators face the sea, and the deck 5 promenade is a quiet spot for scenery at a lower level.
