Viking Expedition Ships

Viking’s twin polar-class expedition ships, Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris, carry just 378 guests to Antarctica, the Arctic and the Great Lakes, with a hangar full of Zodiacs, special operations boats and submarines. We’ve walked the decks and filmed the rooms, so you can see your room before you book.

Purpose-Built for the Ends of the Earth

Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris are identical sister ships, both built in 2022 to Polar Class 6 standards. Each carries 378 guests, so there’s a remarkable amount of space for every passenger. A ballast tank running down the middle keeps them stable, and an in-ship hangar launches Zodiacs, kayaks, special operations boats and two submarines. Beer and wine with lunch and dinner, specialty coffees and an excursion in every port are included in the fare.

Danny filmed this tour aboard Viking Polaris in the Great Lakes, and everything you see applies to her twin, Octantis, too. He walks you from the Explorers’ Lounge and the Bow, through the World Café, the Aula and the Nordic Spa, all the way down to Expedition Central, the Science Lab and the Hangar. Watch the full tour below, or jump straight to the part of the ship you care about most.

Viking Expedition Ships Highlights

The Hangar on Viking Expedition Ships

The Hangar

The Hangar was designed for this class of ship, and Danny calls it unique in the industry. Guests board the special operations boats from a platform inside, settle into shock-absorbing seats, and roll straight out through the stern marina. Zodiacs handle the landings ashore, kayaks wait nearby, and two yellow submarines take guests below the surface. Large side doors open as well, so getting on and off the water is easy and comfortable.

Danny's tip: “Keep in mind the special operations boats don't land on Antarctica. You make your landings by Zodiac.”

The Aula & Finse Terrace

The Aula is a panoramic auditorium at the aft of the ship, inspired by the University of Oslo hall where the Nobel Peace Prize was once presented. It has stadium-style seating, a 4K laser projector and a giant screen. When the screen rises, floor-to-ceiling windows reveal the scenery for lectures from historians, astronomers and naturalists. Sliding glass walls open onto the Finse Terrace, with couches, sunken fire pits, blankets and wraparound views.

Danny's tip: “The aft of the ship is my favorite spot, and the Finse Terrace is where you're going to find me.”

The Nordic Spa on Viking Expedition Ships

The Nordic Spa

For an expedition ship this size, the Nordic Spa is exceptionally large, and its thermal suite is open to every guest at no extra cost. A large Vitality pool sits at the center, with a cold bucket shower, an experience shower, a steam room, a sauna and the Snow Grotto. Outside there’s a wood-style hot tub and heated stone loungers. There’s also a big fitness center, a yoga studio, a salon and a full treatment menu.

Danny's tip: “After a long day on my feet, I love the heated stone loungers. For treatments, my personal favorite is the hot stone massage.”

Expedition Central

Expedition Central is the hub for everything that happens off the ship. Like a shore excursions desk, the team helps with your choices, but the onboard scientists also share what they’ve found, from bait balls of fish to the day’s submarine dives. Charts, maps and a big screen help explain each region. Life-size bird models, specially commissioned by Viking, are swapped for penguins in Antarctica, and a log tracks recent wildlife sightings.

Danny's tip: “One of my favorite features is the wire bird sculptures on the ceiling. They follow the migratory route between the Great Lakes and Antarctica.”

World Café on Viking Expedition Ships

World Café

The World Café is the main dining venue for breakfast, lunch and dinner, relaxed and casual, with made-to-order options. You walk in through an open bakery with fresh bread, pretzels and pizza. Hot dishes rotate daily, alongside a salad bar, charcuterie and fresh fruit. There’s a complimentary sushi bar, a grill that serves burgers at lunch and steaks in the evening, and house-made gelato with a chocolate fountain. Every table gets floor-to-ceiling views.

Danny's tip: “To me, the most important part of the World Café is the ice cream and gelato, with the chocolate fountain. At the grill, I love the onion rings.”

Explorers’ Lounge

Fans of Viking’s ocean ships will find the Explorers’ Lounge familiar. It’s open over two levels, with forward-facing views, cozy faux fireplaces, a curated library and digital game tables. Constellations decorate the ceiling. The wraparound Explorers’ Bar is named for the Hagen family patriarch, with photos of famous explorers and clocks from around the world. It’s a social spot for a cocktail before or after dinner, and a step-out deck sits right up front.

Danny's tip: “This is a great place to read during the day. My wife loves these seats because of the natural light.”

The Pools on Viking Expedition Ships

The Pools

The aft pool area sits under a glass roof, with loungers that tuck away, comfy seating and plenty of natural light. In the middle is the tepidarium, a pool guests can swim beneath to pop up outside with the view. On either side are the warm caldarium and the cold frigidarium, a nod to the Nordic tradition of moving between temperatures. Bring food out from the World Café, or stretch out on more loungers at the very back.

Danny's tip: “I love that on this class of ship the entire aft is reserved for all guests, not just the big suites.”

Manfredi’s & The Restaurant

The two specialty restaurants are both included in the fare but require reservations, which open based on stateroom category through My Viking Journey. The Restaurant serves à la carte classics plus regional and seasonal dishes. Manfredi’s, named for a friend of Viking’s chairman, serves Italian favorites in a stunning room with an open kitchen and tables for two, four or larger groups. A private dining room between them can be reserved for special occasions.

Danny's tip: “Once you're on board, you can generally add more reservations. At Manfredi's, I start with the insalata caprese and the pasta fagioli soup, and one of my favorites is the Tuscan steak.”

Signature Experiences on Viking Expedition Ships

The Hide

A speakeasy-style hideaway tucked all the way forward, built to feel like an explorer's shelter. It hosts whiskey tastings and storytelling. Danny says many guests don't find it until late in the cruise, so look for it early.

The Science Lab

Each ship is an active research vessel working with partners such as the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and Scripps Institution of Oceanography. The lab has microscopes and modern equipment, and guests can take part.

Two Submarines

Each ship carries two yellow submarines for dives below the surface. On Polaris they're named George and Ringo. Danny says guests who have tried the submarine have absolutely loved it.
