Viking Ocean Ships

Viking’s small, all-veranda ocean ships carry fewer than 1,000 adult guests, with alternative dining, Wi-Fi, a thermal spa and a shore excursion in every port included. We’ve walked the decks and filmed the rooms, so you can see your room before you book.

Small Sister Ships with Scandinavian Calm

Viking’s ocean fleet is a family of near-identical sister ships, so once you know one, you’ll feel at home on any of them. Each carries 930 or 998 guests, all adults 18 and older, and all staterooms have a private veranda. The design is calm and Scandinavian, with a quiet focus on culture, enrichment and the places you visit, and much of what other lines charge extra for, including the alternative restaurants and the Nordic Spa’s thermal suite, is part of the fare.

Danny filmed this tour aboard Viking Orion, one of his favorites in the fleet. He starts in the Living Room and heads up to the Explorers’ Lounge and planetarium, through the Wintergarden and the pools, into Manfredi’s, The Chef’s Table and the Kitchen Table, and down to the Nordic Spa and Torshavn. Watch the full tour below, or jump straight to the part of the ship you care about most.

Viking Ocean Ships Highlights

The Living Room on Viking Ocean Ships

The Living Room

The Living Room is the heart of every Viking Ocean ship and usually the first space guests see on boarding. A sweeping staircase rises through a three-level atrium, and a baby grand piano plays through the day. Cozy seating nooks hold board games and a curated library of real books. The bar keeps cookies, sandwiches and light bites coming with coffees, teas and cocktails, and Guest Services and the shore excursion desk sit just off to one side.

Danny's tip: “I think it's a requirement to grab one of the cookies at the bar every time you walk by. And I love that they still have real books on board.”

Explorers’ Lounge

All the way forward, the Explorers’ Lounge is Viking’s version of the observation lounge, with sofas and armchairs facing floor-to-ceiling windows and an outdoor area for photos and stargazing. A bar named for the Hagen family patriarch serves drinks throughout, and a piano brings entertainment every evening. The upper level adds more forward-facing seating and another library. On Viking Orion, it’s also home to the planetarium, with telescopes just outside for the night sky.

Danny's tip: “I love that you can step just outside the lounge, take some pictures and enjoy the scenery.”

Wintergarden

The Wintergarden is designed for any time of year, with a glass ceiling, floor-to-ceiling windows and a back wall that opens up to become part of the pool area. Classical music plays on the piano every day, and the space hosts afternoon tea and small gatherings. It’s a quiet place to read a book or catch up with friends. Enclosed lanais on either side add sofas and tables with big views, perfect for a game of cards.

Main Pool

The Main Pool sits under a retractable glass roof, so the crew can open or close it and keep the area cooled or heated to suit wherever the ship is sailing. The pool runs down the middle, with padded loungers at the edge for dipping your toes, a hot tub just behind and loungers that extend ottoman style. The Pool Bar serves drinks throughout, and the Pool Grill in the corner cooks burgers, hot dogs and chicken alongside a full salad bar.

Danny's tip: “The pool is perfect for laps in the morning or later in the evening.”

Aquavit Terrace & Infinity Pool on Viking Ocean Ships

Aquavit Terrace & Infinity Pool

At the back of the World Café, the two-story Aquavit Terrace opens to the outdoors when the weather allows, with a large bar and tables under the overhangs. Step farther aft and you reach the glass-backed Infinity Pool, where guests can swim right to the stern and watch the wake. Padded ledges, a hot tub and ottoman-style loungers surround it, with bar service from the terrace and seating in both sun and shade.

Danny's tip: “My favorite spot on any cruise ship is the very aft. I grab my food inside, head all the way back, and enjoy those views with a little al fresco dining.”

Manfredi’s Italian Restaurant

Manfredi’s is one of Viking’s alternative restaurants, and like The Chef’s Table it carries no extra charge. Guests in higher stateroom categories can reserve earlier and more often, but every guest gets to dine here. The meal starts with handmade pastas and antipasti such as bruschetta and Caprese salad, then moves to dishes from land and sea, with a wine list to match each course. Booths and tables for two, four or more fill the room.

Danny's tip: “For me, it's always about that incredible Bistecca Fiorentina. And just ask the sommelier, they'll pair a wine with each course.”

The Kitchen Table on Viking Ocean Ships

The Kitchen Table

The Kitchen Table is Viking’s culinary school at sea, built for guests who love to cook or want to learn more about a culture. Classes cover technique, history and how the region’s flavors work together, and some begin with an excursion before everyone heads to the kitchen. Each station has induction cooktops and sinks, and cameras above the chef’s demonstration kitchen feed large screens so everyone can follow along. Then you get to eat the results.

Danny's tip: “I've always said the best way to learn about a culture is through its food, and the Kitchen Table is the perfect way to do it wherever you're sailing.”

The Nordic Spa

The Nordic Spa reflects Viking’s Norwegian heritage, and Danny calls it one of the most extensive at sea for a ship this size. The thermal suite is included for all guests, with a thalassotherapy pool, a hot tub, heated stone loungers, experience showers, a steam room and a snow grotto for a Nordic hot-and-cold circuit. Each locker room adds a sauna and a cold plunge pool. A salon and a large fitness center with an aerobics studio are nearby.

Danny's tip: “Stop by the very first day to tour the spa and book your treatments, because sea days fill up quicker than port days. My personal favorite is the hot stone massage.”

Signature Experiences on Viking Ocean

The Planetarium

Viking Orion has a planetarium in the Explorers' Lounge, with comfy reclining seats under a domed screen and presentations on the night sky, often led by an astronomer on board. Danny notes it's found on only select Viking Ocean ships.

Mamsen's

A complimentary casual spot just inside the Explorers' Lounge, serving the Hagen family matriarch's original recipes. Expect Norwegian waffles with strawberries, sandwiches and light bites into the evening. Danny says he dreams about those waffles every time he disembarks.

▶ See it · 3:58

The Chef's Table

A multi-course tasting menu paired with wines, and the theme changes during the voyage. On Danny's previous sailing it rotated through Korean, California and Chinese-inspired menus. It's included in your fare, and he says you'll want to come back more than once.
