Cozumel, Mexico
Reefs you can see from the pier, Mayan ruins in the jungle and a downtown made for wandering. Here’s how to make one day ashore count.
A Western Caribbean favorite
Cozumel is the stop Harr Travel guests sail to more than any other Caribbean port except Royal Caribbean’s own CocoCay. The island sits about 12 miles off Mexico’s Yucatán coast, and most of what people come for is close to the pier: clear water and world-class reefs on the west side, Mayan ruins and jungle in the middle, and the town of San Miguel with its plaza, market and waterfront.
The trick is choosing. In a single day you can snorkel El Cielo, walk the San Gervasio ruins, spend the afternoon at a beach club or eat your way through downtown, but probably not all four. Below are the excursions our guests book most, the ones we’d book ourselves and the details that keep the day easy.
Which pier you’ll dock at
Some lines use more than one pier, so confirm yours on your itinerary a few days before you arrive.
Punta Langosta
Right in downtown San Miguel. Step off the ship and you’re a short walk from the waterfront, shops and restaurants, so this is the easiest pier for guests who want to explore on foot.
Used by: Celebrity, Disney, Holland America, MSC, Norwegian, Oceania, Regent, Royal Caribbean, Silversea and Viking.
International Pier
About five miles south of downtown, beside Puerta Maya, and built for the largest ships. It sits closest to the beach clubs on the southwest shore.
Used by: Celebrity, Disney, MSC and Royal Caribbean.
Puerta Maya
Next to the International Pier, with its own shopping village at the foot of the pier. It’s close to the southwest beach clubs and Chankanaab Park.
Used by: Princess, Holland America, Cunard and Seabourn.

Cruise line favorites
Book these in your cruise planner. Ship-sold tours cost a bit more, but the ship waits for you if the tour runs late.
- Chankanaab Park. Dolphin and manatee encounters, a sea lion show and snorkeling in a national marine park. A long-time family favorite our guests ask about often.
- Atlantis Submarine. A real submarine dive along the reef wall. Kids and non-swimmers see the reef through the portholes without getting wet.
- Tulum by ferry. The clifftop Mayan ruins on the mainland. It’s a long day with a ferry each way, which is why we suggest booking it through your cruise line so the ship waits if you run late.
- Beach clubs. Mr. Sancho’s and similar all-inclusive beach clubs are sold onboard too, often with transfers included.
Exploring without a tour
Prefer to explore at your own pace? These are the highlights to know, wherever your day takes you. Keep an eye on the clock.
Downtown San Miguel
Walk the waterfront to Plaza de las Dos Culturas and the main square, Parque Benito Juárez, then head inland to the Mercado Municipal for a true local lunch.
The west-side reefs
Palancar, Colombia and Paraíso reefs sit within the Cozumel Reefs National Park. Some of the best snorkeling in the Caribbean is just off this coast, and many reef tours start close to the piers.
The wild east coast
Rocky coves and big surf on the island’s undeveloped side. Swimming isn’t safe in many spots, but the scenery is some of the most dramatic on the island.
Before you go ashore
- All-aboard is firm. If you book independently, plan to be back at the pier an hour before all-aboard. Ships do leave without late guests.
- Mainland days are long. Tulum and Chichén Itzá mean a ferry each way, and Chichén Itzá is a very long day from Cozumel. If the mainland is on your list, book through your cruise line.
- The piers are long. Guests with limited mobility should ask in advance for wheelchair assistance down the pier. We can arrange it with your cruise line.
- Tours can change. Local operators sometimes cancel because of weather or guide availability.
- Coming soon. Royal Caribbean is building Royal Beach Club Cozumel on the island’s southwest shore. The opening date has moved more than once, so ask your advisor for the latest.
