Kusadasi, Türkiye
The marble streets of Ephesus, the House of the Virgin Mary and a seaside bazaar steps from the pier. Here’s how to plan the day around the ruins.
The gateway to Ephesus
Kusadasi is a lively resort town on Türkiye’s Aegean coast, and most people come for one reason: Ephesus. The ancient city sits about 12 miles inland, near the town of Selçuk, and it’s one of the best-preserved Roman sites in the Mediterranean. Walk its marble streets past the Library of Celsus and the Great Theater, then add the House of the Virgin Mary, the Basilica of St. John or the lone column that marks the Temple of Artemis. When guests tell us about their Eastern Mediterranean cruise afterward, Ephesus is often the highlight they mention first.
Ephesus is a 20- to 45-minute drive each way depending on traffic, and the site itself takes a few hours on foot, so this is a day to plan rather than improvise. A guided tour handles the tickets, the timing and the return to the ship. Below are the shore excursions we’d book, the ship tours worth knowing about and the details that keep a Kusadasi day easy.
Where you’ll dock
Every cruise ship in Kusadasi docks at Ege Port, right in town. Several ships can be in port at once, so check your itinerary for timing.
Ege Port
Two long finger piers lead to a single terminal with duty-free shops and the Scala Nuova shopping area. Step out of the port gate and you’re on the waterfront, a short walk from the old bazaar. Tour guides, including the ones for the excursions below, meet guests at or just outside the terminal. On busy days four or more ships share the port, so expect a crowd at the gate in the morning.
Used by: Azamara, Celebrity, Explora Journeys, Holland America, MSC, Norwegian, Oceania, Princess, Regent, Royal Caribbean, Seabourn, Silversea, Viking, Virgin Voyages and Windstar.

Cruise line favorites
Book these in your cruise planner. Ship-sold tours cost a bit more, but the ship waits for you if the tour runs late.
- Ephesus guided tour. The essential Kusadasi excursion: a guided walk downhill through the ancient city from the upper gate to the Library of Celsus and the Great Theater, usually about four hours.
- Ephesus & the House of the Virgin Mary. Adds the small stone chapel on Mount Koressos, a pilgrimage site for Christians and Muslims alike. It’s a quiet, green contrast to the ruins.
- The Terrace Houses. Covered excavations of wealthy Roman homes with mosaics and frescoes, inside Ephesus but on a separate ticket that costs extra. Many tours offer them as an upgrade.
- Ephesus & Şirince village. Ruins in the morning, then a hillside village known for its fruit wines, olive oil soap and stone houses. A good pick if you’ve seen Ephesus before.
Exploring without a tour
Prefer to explore at your own pace? These are the highlights to know, wherever your day takes you. Keep an eye on the clock.
The old bazaar
Just across from the port gate, the lanes of the old town are full of carpet and leather shops, Turkish delight counters and cafés. Bargaining is expected, so take your time and buy only what you love.
Pigeon Island
Güvercinada, a small island joined to the shore by a causeway, is crowned by an Ottoman-era stone fortress with paved paths, sea views and a view back over the town.
Turkish coffee & a slow lunch
The waterfront is lined with cafés. Sit down for Turkish coffee or tea, a plate of meze or fresh fish, and watch the harbor before you head back to the ship.
Before you go ashore
- All-aboard is firm. Ephesus traffic can add real time to the return on busy port days. If you book independently, plan to be back at the port an hour before all-aboard.
- Start early, bring water. After a summer visit, the heat at Ephesus is what guests mention most. The site has little shade and the marble paving gets hot and slippery. Wear comfortable shoes with grip, a hat and sunscreen, and go in the morning if you can.
- The Terrace Houses cost extra. They sit inside Ephesus but need their own ticket. If they matter to you, choose a tour that includes them.
- Dress for sacred sites. The House of the Virgin Mary and mosques in town ask for covered shoulders and knees. A light scarf is easy to carry.
- Traveling with mobility needs? Ephesus involves long stretches of uneven marble and some steps. If you or someone in your party has mobility needs, tell your advisor when you book. Our accessibility specialist can help arrange the right support.
