Liverpool, England
The Beatles, a grand waterfront and a city with real swagger, and your ship ties up right in the middle of it. Here’s how to make one day ashore count.
A city that rocks
Liverpool was once the busiest port in the British Empire, the place millions of emigrants sailed from for America, and the city still wears that history on its waterfront. The Royal Liver Building, the Cunard Building and the Port of Liverpool Building, known together as the Three Graces, stand right where your ship ties up. Next door are the Museum of Liverpool and the restored warehouses of the Royal Albert Dock.
Then there are the Beatles. They’re what guests ask us about most before a Liverpool call, and for good reason: the Beatles Story, the Cavern Club and the streets that inspired the songs are all here. Add two striking cathedrals, a famous football culture and pubs with real character, and one day goes fast. Below are the cruise line favorites and the details that keep the day easy.
Where you’ll dock
Liverpool has one cruise terminal, right on the city waterfront. Confirm your arrival time on your itinerary a few days before you arrive.
Liverpool Cruise Terminal
A floating landing stage on the River Mersey at Pier Head, so ships tie up alongside rather than tendering. You step off into the heart of the waterfront, with the Three Graces and the Museum of Liverpool a short walk from the pier. Ship tours and shuttles leave from just outside the terminal. Global Ports Holding took over the terminal in 2024 and has announced an upgrade with a new pontoon and terminal building, so expect some work around the berth in the next few seasons.
Used by: Celebrity, Cunard, Holland America, MSC, Norwegian, Oceania, Princess, Regent, Silversea and Viking.
Cruise line favorites
Book these in your cruise planner. Ship-sold tours cost a bit more, but the ship waits for you if the tour runs late.
- Beatles tour. The childhood homes, Penny Lane, Strawberry Field and the Cavern Club, usually with a guide who knows every story. Some versions include the National Trust tours of John’s and Paul’s childhood homes, which sell out early.
- Chester. A walled Roman city with medieval timber-framed shopping galleries called the Rows. It’s about an hour away, so this is a half to full day.
- North Wales & Conwy Castle. A longer day to one of Europe’s great medieval castles and the mountains of Snowdonia beyond. Book it through your cruise line so the timing is covered.
- Liverpool highlights. A city tour that ties together the waterfront, both cathedrals and the Georgian Quarter, often with time at the Albert Dock. A good choice for a first visit.
Exploring without a tour
Prefer to explore at your own pace? These are the highlights to know, wherever your day takes you. Keep an eye on the clock.
The Three Graces
The Royal Liver Building, with its famous Liver Birds on top, plus the Cunard Building and the Port of Liverpool Building. The Museum of Liverpool sits beside them and tells the city’s story, from the docks to the music.
Royal Albert Dock
Grand 19th-century warehouses now full of museums, cafés and shops. The Beatles Story is here, along with the Merseyside Maritime Museum and the International Slavery Museum.
The Cavern Quarter
Mathew Street and the rebuilt Cavern Club, where the Beatles played nearly 300 times. Expect live music, Beatles-themed pubs and plenty of photo stops.
Before you go ashore
- All-aboard is firm. If you book independently, plan to be back at the pier an hour before all-aboard. Ships do leave without late guests.
- Book Beatles tours early. Beatles tours are the most popular thing to do here, and small-group and childhood-home tours fill up well before sailing day.
- Traveling with mobility needs? Some tours use coaches or vehicles that aren’t fully accessible. If you or someone in your party has mobility needs, tell your advisor when you book. Our accessibility specialist can help arrange the right support.
- UK entry. U.S. citizens now need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for a cruise that visits the UK. Apply online before you travel, and check your cruise line’s document guidance.
- Itineraries can change. We regularly see British Isles itineraries adjusted, with ports swapped for berth availability, weather or, in Liverpool’s case, terminal work. Check your final itinerary close to sailing.
