Royal Caribbean’s Hero of the Seas hit the water this week, and she’s bringing the biggest changes yet to the Icon class — plus Legend of the Seas has its godmother, Regent unveiled its most luxurious ship ever built, and Viking’s first hydrogen-powered ship is now sailing. It’s a packed week, so let’s dig in.
Royal Caribbean’s fourth Icon-class ship, Hero of the Seas, floated out this week — and she’s the one to watch. Every third or fourth ship in a Royal Caribbean class tends to bring the biggest evolutions, and Hero doesn’t disappoint: she’ll debut the line’s first-ever Ultimate Family Treehouse, along with a significantly larger Hideaway, the adults-only retreat at the back of the ship.
Hero will homeport in Miami, taking over for Icon of the Seas, which relocates to Galveston, Texas — worth watching for relocation pricing once that itinerary goes live. Right behind Hero, the fifth Icon-class ship is already under construction, part of an eye-popping build schedule: Royal has seven Icon-class ships on order through 2030, plus another Oasis-class ship in 2028 and the all-new Project Discovery in 2029. That’s ten of the largest ships in the world delivered in roughly eight years. Royal’s 2028–29 deployment is also expected to go on sale in the coming weeks.
Also from Royal: Legend of the Seas has her godmother. General Lori J. Robinson, a 37-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force, was named godmother this week, and the naming ceremony will take place on Veterans Day, November 11, in the ship’s AquaDome — a tribute Royal is building around honoring veterans and their families.
Elsewhere in new ships: Carnival opened bookings for Tropicale, the fifth and final Excel-class ship, arriving with six waterslides, a new Emerald’s Coastal Seafood Restaurant, LNG power, and an amplified top-deck experience built to go head-to-head with Royal. Viking launched its first hydrogen fuel-cell-powered ship at Fincantieri’s Ancona shipyard — not pure hydrogen power, but a real step forward — with her maiden voyage roughly six months out. And Celebrity’s first river ship is officially on the water, its two-and-a-half-deck design and pop-out dining pods now visible for the first time; Celebrity has 29 sister ships already on order behind her.
On the luxury side, Regent Seven Seas pulled back the curtain on Prestige, its first new ship class in a decade and, by the line’s own description, its most extensive vessel ever built. Expect the brand’s signature residential-style suites taken up a notch, plus a complimentary spa. She’ll launch in late December with a transatlantic crossing, then head through the Panama Canal to Los Angeles for her christening — one of three inaugural events Regent is holding for her.
And Oceania’s Aurelia refit is taking shape: the roughly 700-passenger ship is being converted to a 75%-suite-forward layout, dropping to around 450 passengers with new categories including six Owner Suites and 108 Penthouse Suites, ahead of her run in Oceania’s signature 180-day world cruise (now bookable in shorter 15- to 20-day segments for 2028).
A few quick hits: Explora Journeys redeployed Explorer II to Europe for the season and will send Explorer I to South America for 2027–28 — Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Patagonia, and the Chilean fjords — with pricing a bit softer than usual due to the late itinerary change. Holland America is refreshing Chef Masaharu Morimoto’s namesake restaurant menu fleetwide by mid-November, ahead of his ambassador sailing on Nieuw Amsterdam. Oceania is running the industry’s first gluten-free voyage, a 12-night British Isles cruise. Princess launched a Rose Parade float contest for Captain’s Circle Elite members, with four winners chosen from submitted essays. And Norwegian revealed the new entertainment lineup for Aura, headlined by Whitney, a Whitney Houston tribute produced with the Houston Estate, alongside a Cirque-style show called Illuminox — all debuting when Aura launches in mid-2027.
Last but not least, congratulations to Royal Caribbean President and CEO Michael Bayley, who this week celebrated 45 years with the company — a career that started as an assistant purser aboard the m.s. Nordic Prince back in 1981.
