The Most Unique Specialty Dining Experiences at Sea

From Royal Railway and Le Petit Chef to Chef's Table Lumière, Anthology and Silversea's S.A.L.T. Lab, these are the most unique specialty dining experiences at sea, which ships have them, what's included and how to book.

The most unique specialty dining at sea turns dinner into an experience. You can ride a train car along the Silk Road on Royal Caribbean’s Legend of the Seas, watch a tiny animated chef cook on your plate with Celebrity, dine behind a curtain of light on Princess, or take a cooking class by day and a tasting menu by night with Silversea. Here are our favorites, and how to book them.

We’ve filmed restaurants on dozens of ships, and our guests ask about the same handful of dinners again and again. These are the ones built around a story, a show, a famous chef or a setting you won’t find on land. Below, we sort them by style, show which ships have them and what’s included, and share Danny’s tips from our ship tours.

What Makes a Specialty Restaurant Truly Unique?

Plenty of ships have a great steakhouse or sushi bar. The dinners on this list stand out for at least one of four reasons:

  • Format: a tasting menu, a single seating or a private room changes the whole pace of the night.
  • Story: the room, the servers and the courses all play a part in a show.
  • Chef: a well-known chef designed the menu, or the chef cooks and talks you through it in person.
  • Setting: the space itself is the reason to go, from a train car to a glass-walled garden.

Immersive Dinners: When Dinner Is the Show

Royal Railway (Royal Caribbean)

Utopia of the Seas and Legend of the Seas

Royal Caribbean calls Royal Railway one of its immersive “eatertainment” concepts. You board a train car built into the ship, and screens in the windows, live performers and a multi-course meal carry you somewhere else. On Utopia of the Seas, Utopia Station is a family-friendly ride through the Wild West. On Legend of the Seas, Legend Station follows Marco Polo’s Silk Routes. Across five courses, you travel from China through India, Persia and Turkey before arriving in Italy.

Danny’s tip: “I’ve been a train nut since I was a little kid. The waiters are all part of it, but I highly recommend that you book it early on. Check with your travel advisor so you can lock it in the moment it’s available.”

See every Legend restaurant, including Royal Railway, in our Legend of the Seas dining guide.

Le Petit Chef (Celebrity Cruises)

Many Celebrity ships, including Celebrity Apex, Beyond, Ascent and Xcel

At Le Petit Chef, projectors in the ceiling bring a tiny animated chef to life on your table, and each course comes with its own little show. The animation comes from the artists at Skullmapping, and the menu comes from Celebrity’s chefs. On Edge Series ships it takes over Le Grand Bistro in the evening, so the bistro walls close and the tables become the screen.

Danny’s tip: “Le Petit Chef is very popular, so take advantage of the pre-reserve options on the app or the website. And keep in mind: French for lunch at Le Grand Bistro, then Le Petit Chef for dinner.”

One of our returning guests told us the menu had changed since her last visit, and the bouillabaisse was “so worth it.” If you’ve done it before, it’s worth asking your advisor what’s new.

Wonderland (Royal Caribbean)

Select ships, including Quantum, Anthem, Spectrum and Odyssey of the Seas

“From the depths of imagination comes a feast for the senses known as Wonderland,” says Royal Caribbean. The room leans into Alice in Wonderland, with checkered patterns and a rabbit pointing you down the hole. The small, playful plates are full of sensory surprises.

Danny’s tip: “When you sit down, you get a paintbrush and a little bowl of water. You paint the menu with water, and that reveals the dishes.”

Wonderland fills up fast. Several of our guests have found it fully booked by the time they looked, so reserve before you sail.

Supper Clubs: Dinner and a Show at Your Table

Royal Caribbean: Icon of the Seas, Star of the Seas and Legend of the Seas

Each Icon Class ship has its own supper club, a multi-course dinner where curated dishes and cocktails are paired with live music. Each one has its own theme:

  • Empire Supper Club on Icon of the Seas: an eight-course menu of haute American cuisine in Central Park, set to a three-piece band.
  • Lincoln Park Supper Club on Star of the Seas: 1930s Chicago, with dishes inspired by the city’s famous dining spots. Take a closer look at Lincoln Park.
  • Hollywoodland Supper Club on Legend of the Seas: the golden age of the silver screen, with each course served with a cocktail and live music from a piano, a bass and a singer.

Advisor tip: Supper clubs are multi-course evenings with live music. Book as soon as reservations open, and choose a night when you don’t have an early excursion the next morning.

Tasting Menus and Wine Pairings

Chef’s Table Lumière (Princess Cruises)

Discovery, Enchanted, Majestic, Regal, Royal and Sky Princess

Chef’s Table Lumière is a multi-course dinner hosted by the executive chef. You’re “seated at a custom-crafted table and surrounded by a shimmering curtain for an intimate touch of privacy,” as Princess puts it.

Danny’s tip: “It’s an exquisitely prepared, wine-paired meal, and the chef tells you what it’s all about. Make sure you book it early, because it will fill up.”

La Reserve by Wine Spectator and Privée (Oceania Cruises)

La Reserve on Allura, Vista, Marina and Riviera; Privée on Allura, Vista and Riviera

On Oceania, the specialty restaurants are included in your fare. The two exceptions are its most special dinners. La Reserve by Wine Spectator hosts food-and-wine pairing dinners, such as the Connoisseur Menu, where each course comes with its own wine. Privée is a private dining room for a single party each evening, with a choice of chef-designed menus.

Danny’s tip: “Specialty restaurants are included. Keep in mind there are a couple of really unique, over-the-top experiences, like the Dom Pérignon experience and the Wine Spectator La Reserve experience.”

Privée is a natural fit for a milestone birthday or anniversary with family or friends. For every restaurant and menu on every ship, see our Oceania Cruises dining menus guide.

Anthology (Explora Journeys)

Explora Journeys ships, including Explora I

Explora Journeys calls Anthology its signature fine-dining experience. The menu, created by Head of Culinary Franck Garanger, takes you on a journey through Italy’s finest regional ingredients. Anthology has also hosted visiting chefs, including Mauro Uliassi and Claude Le Tohic. Unlike most of Explora’s restaurants, it isn’t part of the inclusive fare, and an experience fee applies.

Danny’s tip: “Anthology is an incredible love letter to Italy, and it’s one I highly recommend you book. You’ve got seating inside and out. Outside is my personal favorite, especially while you’re sailing.”

The Chef’s Table (Viking)

Viking Ocean ships

At The Chef’s Table, Viking’s sommeliers and chefs pair food and wine across a multi-course tasting. You can enjoy it in the restaurant or in a private dining room. Every dining venue on a Viking ocean ship is included in your fare, so this is one of the easiest tasting menus at sea to say yes to.

Chef-Partner Restaurants

Le Voyage by Daniel Boulud (Celebrity Cruises)

Celebrity Beyond, Celebrity Ascent and Celebrity Xcel

“World renowned chef Daniel Boulud, our Global Culinary Ambassador, has created his first signature restaurant at sea,” says Celebrity. Le Voyage serves globally inspired dishes in an intimate room with soft tones and private banquettes, and it has a wine list to match. You’ll find it on Celebrity Beyond, Celebrity Ascent and Celebrity Xcel. Our Celebrity Xcel dining guide covers every restaurant on the newest of the three.

Remy (Disney Cruise Line)

Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy

Remy is Disney’s adults-only take on upscale French dining, with a menu inspired by Ratatouille. It’s a grown-up night out on a family ship.

Danny’s tip: “The name refers to the movie Ratatouille. The reference is there, but it’s really just exquisite French food, with a huge collection of French wines to go with it.”

The Test Kitchen (Virgin Voyages)

Virgin Voyages ships

Virgin Voyages works with Michelin-starred chefs, including Matt Lambert behind The Test Kitchen. The tasting menu reads like a list of ingredients, and the kitchen plays with technique, presentation and flavor from there. Like every eatery on Virgin’s adults-only ships, it’s included in your voyage fare. See our Virgin Voyages dining menus for the full lineup.

Culinary-Class Dining: Cook It, Then Taste It

S.A.L.T. Lab, Kitchen and Chef’s Table (Silversea)

S.A.L.T. Lab and Chef’s Table on Silver Nova and Silver Ray

Silversea’s S.A.L.T. (Sea And Land Taste) program is built around the places you visit. By day, S.A.L.T. Lab is a professional teaching kitchen for complimentary, hands-on classes in regional techniques. Each evening, the Lab becomes S.A.L.T. Chef’s Table, an intimate “culinary theater” with one seating and an 11-course menu of small plates built on local ingredients. S.A.L.T. Kitchen is complimentary, and Silversea calls it “the only restaurant at sea with an ever-changing menu based on destination.”

More Ways to Cook at Sea

On Celebrity’s Edge Series ships, Eden also hosts cooking classes and wine seminars. Celebrity Xcel adds Chef’s Studio, the line’s first destination-inspired cooking classes, in The Bazaar.

One-of-a-Kind Settings

Eden Restaurant (Celebrity Cruises)

Celebrity Edge, Apex, Beyond and Ascent

Celebrity describes Eden as “a unique culinary journey that transports you through Eden itself.” The space spans three stories of glass at the back of the ship, filled with living plants, and the chefs finish dishes in an open kitchen. Come at sunset if you can. Read more in our closer look at Eden.

Gunbae (Virgin Voyages)

Virgin Voyages ships, including Scarlet Lady

Gunbae is Korean barbecue with a grill in the middle of the table. Every meal starts with a Korean drinking game and a complimentary shot of soju, and someone at the table becomes the “meat master.” It’s included in your fare, and it’s one of the liveliest dinners at sea.

Pacific Rim (Regent Seven Seas Cruises)

Seven Seas Grandeur, Seven Seas Splendor and Seven Seas Explorer

Regent pairs pan-Asian dishes with what it calls a “Zen-like ambiance,” with muted lighting, architectural details and lotus-shaped windows. Reservations are required, and like every restaurant on a Regent ship, it’s included in your fare. See our Regent Seven Seas dining menus.

Included or Extra? Contemporary, Premium and Luxury Lines

Whether a unique dinner costs extra depends mostly on the cruise line:

  • Contemporary and premium lines such as Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Princess and Disney include their main dining rooms and buffets. Specialty restaurants and immersive experiences cost extra.
  • Virgin Voyages includes every eatery on board, The Test Kitchen and Gunbae included.
  • Luxury lines include most or all of their specialty restaurants. Regent and Viking include every restaurant. Oceania includes its specialty restaurants, with Privée and La Reserve as the extra-cost exceptions. Explora Journeys includes most of its restaurants, but Anthology carries an experience fee. Silversea’s S.A.L.T. Kitchen and S.A.L.T. Lab classes are complimentary.

Advisor tip: Dining packages can be great value, but they don’t always cover the premium experiences on this list. Before you buy, ask us whether the dinners you want are covered on your ship and sailing.

How to Book the Hard-to-Get Tables

The thing our guests most often ask us for help with isn’t the menu. It’s the reservation: a venue that isn’t showing in the app yet, or a table that’s already gone. A little planning goes a long way:

  • Know when booking opens. Pre-cruise reservations open at different times by line, ship and sometimes stateroom category. On Oceania, for example, how many specialty reservations you can make ahead, and when, depends on the category you book.
  • Book the one-of-a-kind dinners first. Royal Railway, the supper clubs, Wonderland and Chef’s Table Lumière have limited seats.
  • Keep checking. New experiences sometimes open for booking later than the rest of the ship’s restaurants, and tables free up as plans change.
  • Use your advisor. If a venue isn’t showing up or is full, tell us. We can check with the cruise line for you.
  • Share dietary needs early. Tasting menus are set in advance, so let us know about allergies or preferences before you sail.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most unique specialty restaurant on a cruise ship?

It depends on the kind of night you want. For pure spectacle, try Royal Railway on Royal Caribbean’s Utopia or Legend of the Seas, or Le Petit Chef on Celebrity. For food and wine, look at Chef’s Table Lumière on Princess, La Reserve on Oceania or Anthology on Explora Journeys. For something hands-on, Silversea’s S.A.L.T. Lab pairs cooking classes with an 11-course Chef’s Table.

Are specialty restaurants included in the cruise fare?

On contemporary and premium lines like Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Princess and Disney, specialty restaurants usually cost extra. Virgin Voyages includes every eatery. Luxury lines like Regent and Viking include every restaurant, while Oceania and Explora Journeys include most of theirs and charge only for a few premium experiences.

How far in advance should I book specialty dining on a cruise?

As soon as your cruise line opens reservations. The most unique experiences have limited seats and can fill before you board. Your Harr Travel advisor can tell you when booking opens for your sailing and help if a venue isn’t showing up yet.

Which specialty dining experiences are adults only?

Remy on Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy is adults only. Virgin Voyages is an adults-only cruise line, so The Test Kitchen and Gunbae are too. Other venues have their own age policies, so check with your advisor if you’re traveling with kids.

Is a dining package worth it for these experiences?

It can be, but packages don’t always cover premium or immersive experiences, and inclusions change. Tell your advisor which dinners matter most, and we’ll check whether a package makes sense for your ship and sailing.

Where can I celebrate a special occasion at sea?

For privacy, try Privée on Oceania, a private dining room for one party each evening, or Chef’s Table Lumière on Princess, behind its curtain of light. For a festive night, the supper clubs on Royal Caribbean’s Icon Class ships pair every course with a cocktail and live music.
